TYPBC is committed to creating the next generation of both sailing champions and sailing lovers.
We offer a clear path for children from 8 years + to learn to sail using equipment provided by TYPBC. The learning process involves a mix of both team and individual sailing in Optimist and RS Quest dinghies covering water safety, learning to sail individually and as part of a team, rope work, boat preparation & maintenance.
No sailing experience is necessary, just an ability to swim 50m in a life jacket, have confidence in water, and most importantly the desire to learn and have fun. We provide boats, life jackets and helmets, you will need to supply suitable protective clothing ideally this includes a wetsuit. Also bring water bottles and sunscreen.
Our coaches are Yachting New Zealand qualified and are trained in powerboat operation and safety. We run a one coach to a maximum of six children ratio to ensure that all children are looked after in a supportive and stimulating environment.
Please click the button Junior Sailing Guide for more detailed information on the programme and requirements.
APRIL SCHOOL HOLIDAYS 2026
Weather dependent. Please note: Minimum numbers are required to run learn to sail/fun days. We will confirm the class is going ahead as soon as possible.
Course Options
1 - Fun Day Sailing
In the school holidays we have a fun day sailing programme. This is a great way to give sailing a go for one or multiple days without committing to a full course. Giving parents a chance to see if this is something their child would really like to do.
School holiday programs start at 9:00 am to 3.00pm.
These are a great way to find out if your child really likes being on the water before committing to a term of lessons.
Fun day sailing is $69 per session. We do have minimum attendee requirements to run the course and they are weather dependant.
2 - Learn to Sail - Level 1
LTS Level One is a 10 week course designed to teach children the basics of sailing. These are run some week nights 4pm-7pm, weekend mornings 9am-1pm, and we also run a block week course in the school holidays Monday to Friday 9am-3.30pm.
There will be lots of fun and plenty of adventures including both group and individual sailing. Most of the sailing will be club supplied Optimist dinghies with some team sailing in RS Quests and Omega dinghies.
In LTS L1, children will develop the core sailing skills while having fun and meeting new friends. This aligns with Yachting New Zealand LTS Levels one and touches on Level two categories.
3 - Learn to Sail - Level 2
LTS Level 2 is an exciting step up for children once they move on from LTS Level 1.
This course is based around becoming quick, really comfortable with the skills learnt in level one.
As with LTS Level 1, it is a 10-session course over ten weeks. Children have a natural inclination to want to compete and LTS L2 is where we start to harness this.
LTS L2 will be solely in club supplied optimist dinghies and is ideal for children who may have completed learn to sail courses in previous years and want to return to sailing.
The next step from LTS L2 is to go into LTS L3 (green fleet) and learn about racing and engage with regular club racing in your own boat/rental BOPSAT boat.
When your child gets to that point we can advise the best path forward including assisting with purchasing boats.
