Commodore's Comments

A very successful regatta for three of our sailors at the World Cup Regatta in Hyeres, France over the weekend with a gold to Molly Meech in the 49erFX and silver to Sam Meech in the lasers, and bronze to Trent Rippey in the 49er. Congratulations to them. You can read the full report here

Congratulations too to Teaghan Denney who has been invited to join the Asian NZ Optimist Travelling team sailing in November and the girls development team sailing January next year in Tasmania at the Australian nationals. Training starts next week in Gulf harbour for all traveling teams .

Be sure to watch Coast NZ this Sunday night. The programme is based in the Bay of Plenty and includes the material shot at the Club recently.

The Club will be hosting a race management training weekend on July 14th & 15th. The course is run by Yachting NZ and is free and is a great opportunity for those interested in learning more about helping with race management. More details here

P Class sailors from near and far will be congregating at the Club this weekend to compete for the Wihau Shield. Up to 25 P’s are expected so good luck to all our sailors competing in that one.

Before that we have the Annual Club Prizegiving for all Divisions on Friday starting promptly at 7pm. Look out for details in this newsletter regarding when meals will be available.

Good sailing.

Up coming friday night event

I am an Australian Sailor and am putting together a 2-week speaking tour across New Zealand where I will be presenting to yacht clubs about my solo circumnavigation of Antarctica.

Last year I became the first women to sail solo around the Antarctic, my journey was filled with challenges including 15-meter waves, snow storms and my dramatic de-masting in rough seas due to a failure of rigging equipment.  I have attached for you a full outline of my presentation for your consideration as well as my biography.

I competed in the 2011-12 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race that stopped at Tauranga so it would be great to be able to present here.  This tour is a fundraiser for my next challenge, becoming the first woman to sail solo around Australia, departing in October. There will be a charge of $20 at the door with all funds going towards the refit and maintenance costs of my yacht.  This is a great family-friendly event and one that is enjoyable for all ages, sailors and non-sailors alike, I would encourage you to make sales from drinks and food on the evening.

This will be a great evening make sure you come along and support an amazing sailor and your club

finish with a laugh..
