Commodore's Comments
Hopefully you will have received an email from the Club this week with regards to the University Campus that is proposed at Sulphur Point. If not then please read it below. It would be really good to have a good turnout at the Q&A sessions (This Saturday 9-12noon at Sulphur Point) so that we can put pressure on the Council to find an alternative site – we are confident these do exist. We also need you to convey your views to Councillors by email. Please do not rely on other people to do this. Your Flag Officers believe that it is vital that we preserve this area of land for future recreational use.
Well done to the team that organised and ran the Tauranga Regatta last weekend. Despite gloomy skies a great regatta was enjoyed. Well done to the winners of the classes : Miyah Prescott (Green Fleet Opti), Matt Belton (Green Fleet Starling), Reuben Coxhead (Opti Open), Tim Roper (Starling Open), Mark Thomas (Zephyr) and Kirk Vosper (Open Fleet).
I have been asked to point out that contrary to what has been published on the calendar, there is no Hamilton Regatta this weekend so there will be Club racing for the Centre board Div on Sunday as normal.
The Keeler Division have the Mike Garner Memorial race on Sunday, and the Multihulls are hoping to leave the harbour and race down to Papamoa – although the weather may have a say in that
Well done to Harry Bailey who recently competed in the A Class Nationals at Wakatere. At 15 years he was the youngest competitor and he finished 5th overall in the 13 boat fleet. He is now heading off to the Worlds in Hervey Bay Australia in November
Meanwhile at Kohimarama two of our Starling sailors were competing at Junior Sail Auckland where Sydney Cunliffe (7th overall and 2nd girl) and Lachlan Dillon (3rd overall) achieved great results.
At 5pm on Wednesday evening there was a nice 10-12 knot northerly and everything looked set for a great nights racing for the Summer Series. Then after waiting for a container ship to depart, by 6.25pm that wind had gone and racing had to be abandoned. Congratulations to the 5 or 6 boats that did manage to cross the starting line.
On the subject of Auckland Tauranga race, we have some spot prizes to award to the competitors and this will be done after racing at the Club next Wednesday.
Windsurfing news hot off the press: Veerle ten Have and Max van der Zalm have been selected for the 2018 NZL Youth Sailing Team and they will go to the USA to compete in the Worlds – well done to them.
One last request from Bruce Harrison who is in desperate need of two people to help in the Tower next Wednesday evening. Please email Bruce if you can help asap. bjh1900@gmail.com
Good sailing everyone.

Pacrim news
Two and a half weeks to go! Crikey time flys,have you ever noticed the clock speeds up as we get closer
to a start date!!!
Saturday will see one of our International visitors arrive .Team Tauranga will have to practice during the night ,not to give away any secrets!!!!
The committee has been working solidly to stitch together ,visits ,BBQs and activities for all the International participants ,this is a wonderful event to show off Tauranga and the Bay of Plenty .
We require more Spectator boats and people who have some time up their sleeves to roll up those sleeves and lend a hand .Being part of this Pacific Rim 2018 will be a memorable experience.
Cheers
Fred Jeanes

Keeler news
This Sunday is the Mike Garner / Karewa Race – start at 10.00 AM off the Club. Please note that there will be no briefing for this race. The course is in the Sailing Instructions. Finish times need to be text to Peter Decke – 0274 532 759. At this stage it looks like it is going to be a very light race – hopefully the showers will hold off. See the separate email sent out for more details.
The Gold Cup race is coming up on Saturday the 3rd of March – details to come. This race is part of the Bluewater Series.
Don’t forget on Friday 30th of March is the Tauranga – Cuvier Island – Mercury Island race which is part of the Bluewater Series. This is a Cat 3 race. Boats competing in this race are welcome to join the Easter Cruising Rally at Mercury Cove – see details below.
The Easter Cruising Rally at Mercury Cove is coming up.
This inaugural event has been slotted into the calendar where the Auckland to Tauranga Race used to be. Enjoyment is the theme
Organised activities:
- Good Friday Race in two divisions: Extras and No Extras with a motoring allowance. Most likely a Cat 4 plus race but to be confirmed.
- Ladies Race. A female must be the on the helm.
- Rowboat Race.
- Fishing Competition.
- Prizegiving including Spot Prizes.
Details to follow.
Suggestions/assistance welcome: Applications to Gun Caundle – phone 027 358 1729
Spot Prizes for the Auckland to Tauranga Race competitors will be drawn and given out at the Clubhouse following next Wednesday night’s race. If you started this race your boat will be in for the draw. Make sure you come up to the Clubhouse after the race to, hopefully, collect your prize!
While we are on the subject of the Auckland to Tauranga Race – the future of this race is uncertain. To ensure the future success of this race we need a champion to drive the organisation and funding of the race. The Keeler Committee feels that shifting the race to February was a success – we were very unlucky with the weather this year. This would have to be classed as one of the premier coastal races in NZ – technically more demanding than the Coastal Classic. It would be a shame to see the race fade away through lack of interest or organising. I am sure there are lots of Auckland boats that would do the race if the race was promoted better. The earlier we start organising and promoting this race for next year the better. If you would like to lead the charge or be part of the Auckland to Tauranga race committee please let me know.
See you out there.

important update regarding University of waikato facility
Dear Marina User
Take Note: We have been informed that attending these “Drop IN” sessions for consultation will not alone make your voice heard.
Council must consult upon the premise of disposing of the land and the Elected Members must consider the feedback from those that choose to provide a submission before deciding to progress any further.
Things to consider – what about ???
* Storm water discharge
* How many stories, how much of the land will be used?
* Parking
* Infrastructure – and who is paying i.e. new sewer line along Keith Allen Dr
* Funding – no cost to rate payers
* Sell or lease land?
* Traffic management plan
* How can we be assured the consent application will be notified?
* Consent requirement for pumping water in / out the harbour
* Emergency plan for congested roads to Marina
To lodge your submission – you can do one of the following
1. Click here to complete your submission online here
2. Pick up a hard copy from marina office
3. Complete a submission form on site on the day.
4. Email submissions@tauranga.govt.nz<mailto:submissions@tauranga.govt.nz>
5. Fill out a hard copy form available at the Council Customer Service Centre or at any of the city's libraries
7. Write to Tauranga City Council, Private Bag 12022, Tauranga
Unfortunately, the council have not given the option to print this form off via their link, so we have some hard copies here in the marina office for those who cannot complete their submission online.
Kind regards, Gill
