Commodore's Comments

The 58th 12 Foot Skiff Interdominions took place last week at the Royal Akarana YC with several participants having TYPBC links. Names such as Chris Skinner, Tim Bartlett, Oliver Scott Mackie, Ben De Fluiter, Roger Barnes, Greg Roake and Graham Laurie are all former members. Some of these are gentlemen approaching more mature years but good to see them out here enjoying the excitement of the Skiffs. Full results at https://rayc.co.nz/12footers/

Auckland Tauranga Race is fast approaching and we could do with a few more helpers. There is a meeting next Tuesday (7.30pm) so come along if you’d like to help, or contact me direct (nickwrinch@live.com) or via the Office. Tornado Nationals are being held on the same weekend and they need some extra help too so please get in touch. The Club will be a busy place that weekend.

There are a few people looking for lifts to Auckland for the Auckland Tauranga Race – either Friday night or Saturday morning – if you have space or you need a lift – contact the Office. Further to that you can email me and we’ll get something on the Facebook page. Darryl McManus has 3 seat available leaving the club at 5am on the Saturday morning, ring him on 021 982 600.

Many of you will have seen the pictures of the Club’s Kulim Park shed surrounded by water during the recent storm. Insurance assessors have been and had a look and we are waiting to hear their report.
Peter Head and his Elements sailing school have been renting the shed for a number of years, but now Peter has moved on to become harbourmaster at Whitianga and is no longer going to be using the shed. So we now have to consider the value of the shed to the Club and whether we have sufficient requirement to justify the costs of rates, insurance, and general maintenance which Peter Head has been looking after until recently.
Of course once we lose it we will never get it back, but I would be interested to hear any members thoughts on the matter.

There was a challenging breeze on the harbour for the recommencement of the Summer Series last night. There were thrills and spills in many directions and times of almost being becalmed.  Several boats are away on cruising expeditions but still 19 boats headed out although the multihulls wisely stayed ashore. Well done to Whatever, Sabian, No Regrets, and Black Marlin for mastering the conditions.

Good luck to the Starling sailors heading down to the North Island Champs at Worser Bay this weekend – hopefully the weather allows some sailing. Centreboard Division will be out in force on Sunday.

I would like to acknowledge a company who has recently come on board as a corporate sponsor of sailing at the Club. NZWindows has made a significant financial contribution to the Club in their support of Junior sailing and we thank Kevin Allum and his team at NZWindows for their ongoing support.
Kevin has been a supporter of sailing at the AIMS Games and you have to take your hat off to these companies for their support. Needless to say that if you are in the market for some aluminium joinery, please support them.  http://www.nzwindows.co.nz

Good Sailing

Keeler report

The first race of Summer Series 2 was held in shifty, gusty conditions – particularly around Banks Buoy – keeping everyone on their toes. A few broaches under kite were seen. Fleets were down with many boats being away on holiday with their owners. Line honours went to Whatever, Sabian and No Regrets who also earned first place on handicap too in their respective divisions. Second on handicap were Sniper, Reloaded and Flashback and third The Rascal, General Jackson and Farr South.

There are no keelboat races this weekend. The next race will be on Wednesday with Race 2 of Summer Series 2 followed by the Whitianga Race on Saturday the 27th January, a fun race on Wednesday the 31st of January and the Auckland to Tauranga Race on Saturday the 3rd of February. We need some more volunteers to help with the Auckland to Tauranga race – please call Nick Wrench on 027 605 6403 if you or you know of someone who can help.

We need some more help in the Tower on Wednesday nights – if you know anyone who can help please get them to call Bruce Harrison on 027 221 6926 – all help is appreciated by the skippers and crew!

See you out there.

James Stewart,
Keeler Chairman

A reminder to all Sailing on Wednesday, Friday Night or the races on weekends, we need you to fill in a new Safety Declaration. They are on the Keeler section of the website or available from the Club.
