Commodore's Comments

Great turnout and organisation of Xmas on the Beach last Sunday. Well done to Mark Wilkins and his crew for their excellent organisation which was enjoyed by a wide range of keelers and centreboard sailors and thanks to Kembla, Marine Works and Bay Physio sponsoring the day.  Plenty of photos on Facebook including a very wobbly Santa on a paddleboard (and, no, it wasn’t due to the booze!).

In case you’ve forgotten - The Christmas Cocktail party is tonight at 6pm – tickets will be available on the door

Five keelers completed the White Island race last weekend. The 100 mile race was completed in fairly benign conditions. First boat home was Truxton with an elapsed time of under 16 hours. On Club Handicap the winner was Manxman followed by Truxton (a mere19 seconds later), Pork Chop, Open Country, and Whistler and on PHRF the winner was Truxton, followed by Manxman (about 2 minutes later), Whistler and Open Country. Some pretty close racing for a 100 mile race.

As you will probably have seen in the media, the Council have accepted its staff recommendation to work towards locating the Waikato University Marine Campus on the area of grass to the south of the Game Fishing Club. We believe that the northern end of Sulphur Point is not the right location for the Campus. We will all have an opportunity to make submissions in February, and we will do, based on the grounds of the traffic management in the area including the parking issues that will arise. In the meantime you might want to consider dropping an email to your local Councillor(s) and letting them know how you feel about their decisions so far. You can find their email addresses at the following page here

Sail Sydney finished last weekend with Kiwi teams picking up 4 medals with a Tauranga link in every medal winning boat. Great results for Alex Maloney and Molly Meech for winning the 49erfx in style. Well done to Josh Porebski and Trent Rippey for finishing 2nd in the 49er, and in the Lasers Sam Meech and Tom Saunders finished 1st & 2nd(with only one point separating them). Great results.

Good luck to sailors heading off to take part in regattas over the holiday period. Especially the P Class sailors heading to Kohimarama for the Tanner and Tauranga Cups and the Starling Match racing sailors competing at Glendowie in early January – we’ll be watching out for your results with keen interest

Before I sign off for the year I want to give a big thank you to all of members who make things happen both on and off the water at the Club. You are too many to mention but a Club like ours relies on the generosity of these people. Thank you too to the team that support me including our employees at the Club, the Executive Committee, the General Committee and all those people who turn up to Divisional Committees and keep the wheels turning.

I trust that you will have a wonderful Christmas and that Santa manages to fit that new sail down the chimney and that the weather is good for those of you heading up the coast for a holiday.

Wishing you the very best of safe summer sailing and best wishes for 2018

Nick Wrinch
