Commodore's Comments

It has been a mixture of relief and pleasure to announce Sunday August 27 as the day that the Americas Cup, along with Peter Burling and some others members of Emirates Team New Zealand will visit Tauranga and our Club.
Originally October 8th was pencilled in as the day that the Cup would visit Tauranga but the problem with this was that there was always a strong possibility that Pete was going to be involved with the Volvo Ocean race and while we could have the cup on October 8th, it was not going to be much of a party without our Pete.

So I would like to take a moment to thank a few people who have bent over backwards to make this happen; Firstly Steve Mair the Commodore of the RNZYS and Haydn Porter also at the Squadron who were really supportive of us having an event with the Cup and Peter. Richard Meacham at ETNZ, Richard Burling for communicating with Pete when trying to fix dates, Gareth Wallis, Jo Lynskey and Rae Baker at the Council and of course Lynne, Maryanne and Jo in the office who have swung with the punches as dates changed etc and who are now managing the tickets and the preparations. Thanks to everyone - It has been a team effort so please take the time to support the team and the Cup on Sunday week.

The flyer below tells you how to go about getting your tickets. I suggest you don’t leave it until the last minute because you may end up being disappointed.

As a result of this event the Keeler division has decided to bring forward their last race of the Burnsco Winter Series by 24 hours – see details and the report of last Sundays race from the Keeler Division below.
The Keeler Division is having a pre-season rules night again this year which will be run Andy Knowles and Gary Smith. This will be on Wed Sept 20th.

The subs for the new season were emailed out this week. There was a bit of a glitch with the template that was used for about two thirds of the invoices that were sent out. This problem meant there were no details regarding the discount that is deductible if you pay the invoice before September 20th, and the fact that you have the option to donate the discount to the Learn to Sail Programme and that a receipt can be issued so you are able to claim the 33% donation tax rebate to a charitable entity.
You should have received an email to tell you this but if you have any queries about what you should pay then please contact the office on 5785512.

In the meantime this Sunday is the last race in the Steves Marine Winter Series for the Centreboard division followed by a prizegiving afterwards.

Good sailing

Nick Wrinch

Please note that the final race of the Winter Series will be held on Saturday the 26th August at the usual start times. The race has been shifted forward from Sunday to encourage maximum participation by Club Members at the Americas Cup event to be held on the Sunday. Don’t forget!

The Club’s website and Facebook page now include a “Crew Available and Crew Wanted” page which Reina Del la Varis has volunteered to manage. Thanks Reina! If you would like to add your name to the page for either Crew Wanted or Crew Available please email office@yacht.org.nz in the first instance and Lynne will pass your request onto Reina for updating.

Mark your calendar! A Rules Night is planned to be held on Wednesday September 20th. More details to come.

What looked like a very promising race from a wind perspective ended up one of the more frustrating races of the Winter. A course up the harbour to Stowe via the Otumoetai Channel was set. The race started in a 10 to 15 knot northerly however by the time boats reached West 10 Channel Marker the wind had died right out leaving boats battling the outgoing tide in very patchy conditions. Those that were skilled enough to pick where the wind would fill in next were rewarded and made a break on the rest of the fleet. Fortunately the wind filled in again to a light North Wester allowing all but one of the keelboat fleet to finish. Well done to Frenzy for taking line honours in Division 1 and to Whistler in Division 2. Handicap placings in Division 1 were Frenzy, Manxman and Whatever. In Division 2 handicap placings were Whistler, No Regrets and Rascal Tom. With only one race to go it looks like Frenzy will take out Division 1 Winter Series (come on Manxman!) and No Regrets Division 2 (come on Whistler!). The pressure has come off No Regrets due to Andy Kennedy selling Fast Lane!

This course is available to club members and associated groups on a first in first served basis (payment and booking received by the office), with space for a maximum of 24 people (minimum of 10 people).
The cost of the course is $170 for the full course and $100 for those who need the refresher course, which is at a discounted rate to public courses.
