Commodore's Comments

Light and shifty winds for the Burnsco Winter Series last Sunday provided plenty of challenges for the 17 Keelers and 3 multihulls that started.
With only two races remaining in the series Frenzy leads Division 1 with La Rochelle and Manxman both within 3 points. In Division 2 Fast Lane is leading ahead of No Regrets and Whistler. Results are pretty close in the Multihulls with Spitfire just ahead of Feisty Feline and A99.

In Italy Peter Burling has had a highly impressive 2nd in the World Moth Championships. Considering Pete was in a borrowed boat and without the benefit of much preparation, this is a pretty extraordinary result. Well done Pete. More details Here

Also in Europe a strong finish saw Jason Saunders and his Beijaflore team finish on the third at  the Tour de France A la Voile. If you missed the story, then click on this link here

Work is still going on to arrange a welcome home for Pete and the Americas Cup. We are unable to confirm a date just yet but we are hopeful of being able to make an announcement soon .

Good luck to those venturing out for the Steve’s Marine Winter Series for the centreboarders this weekend.

Good sailing

Nick Wrinch

 50th Paper Tiger Nationals

31st December – 6th January 2018 will be the Paper Tigers 50th Nationals. To mark the event it has been turned into a celebration

The Committee wants to gather as much memorabilia as possible – photos, articles, results, newspaper items, regatta shirts, stories, Tiger Rags. Also old “PT
junk” – with a prize for the oldest/most interesting piece. Having only owned my PT for a year and knowing there are many TYPBC members who in the past have either sailed PT’s and or built them - I need your help.

They are particularly interested in old articles, stories and old photographs as a photobook is being compiled. If you have anything of interest, please let me know  ASAP and scan (or if easier I can do it for you) to jomaidment@gmail.com Please also let me know what kind of treasures and memorabilia you have so I can relay this to the New Plymouth Committee so they can prepare a display etc. So search your drawers and garages for interesting memorabilia and photographs and I can take them along to the regatta in New Plymouth.

The invitation has been extended to past champions, legends and old salts of the class and anyone with close ties to the PT over the years. If you would like to come along to the regatta for the day (or few), please contact either Ann secretary@papertiger.org.nz or markhatch@clear.net.nz for further information.

coaches corner

This week in Learn to Sail we battled some tremendous tide, and learned very quickly that if our sail is luffing that we will swiftly get swept down the current. By the end of Saturday’s lesson, all of the optis managed to beat the tide and make it to the buoys. Everyone worked really hard and did an awesome job, which was great to see!

This coming weekend it looks like we have a forecast of very little wind, 6kts gusting 7 by 12pm. Hopefully we have enough wind to get in a good game of Mario Kart Balloon Battle, so we are all crossing our fingers that the weather cooperates!

We are also opening up registrations for Term 4 Sailing, and Spring Holiday Program Sailing very soon, so stay tuned for that. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about our upcoming courses at LTS.coach@yacht.org.nz

See you on the water!
