Commodore's Comments

Things have been a bit quieter at the Club following the mad rush at Easter.
The only event going on at present is the World Masters Games with the sailing regatta being held at Torbay. This event is being hosted by the Torbay Sailing Club and is being raced in Lasers, Laser Radials and Wetas. Club members taking part include Phil Scherer and Rick & Helen Spencer. Good luck to all of them. Also perhaps making his presence felt is Vice Commodore Andy Knowles who is on a Judges Boat. Full details http://www.worldmastersgames2017.co.nz/the-sports/schedules-and-results/sailing/

Its always nice to pass on some good news at a time like this and so congratulations go to both Max vander Zalm and Veerle ten Have have been selected by High Performance Sport NZ to do the Pathway to Podium programme for wind surfing. Well done to them on this great achievement!

closing day race report..

Nine yachts arrived at the starting area on Sunday to compete in the last race of the summer season. A shifty and gusty Easterly arrived to provide nice sailing conditions contrary to some weather predictions.

Frenzy led the keelers out of the harbour entrance only to be a victim of the Mount wind eddies and variances, other following yachts suffered the same fate to various degrees except for Manxman who hugged the Mount shoreline to slip through, they were followed by Sabian and Truxton joining into the “Baxy” lift.

Luckily the outgoing tide progressed the remainder of the fleet through the entrance, the order remained quite constant as the yachts rounded ‘A’ buoy hoisting their spinnakers for a nice ride to Karewa, Tigger flew down the coast getting thoroughly wet but exhilarated off into the distance.

Frenzy gradually caught Manxman only to fall into another hole going back into the entrance to finish just behind at the club. The rest of the fleet had variable conditions at the entrance too, with wind pockets providing some unusual tacking angles, the incoming tide assisted the return trip providing a quick finish at the club and fast overall trip speeds. A nice rum finished off the 2017 summer season quite nicely for the fleet, bring on Winter!

420 school racing..

420 schools team racing Nationals are taking place in Auckland, Tauranga Boys are competing in the Silver Fleet, and Tauranga Girls are competing and winning racers in the Bronze Fleet.

The first part of the week has been sailed in light winds hopefully the 2nd half picks up a bit.

Good luck to both teams for the rest of the week, and we look forward to hearing the final results.

coaches corner...

This week in Learn to Sail we are running our Easter Holiday Program. So far it's going great, with a total of 17 kids working on various levels this week! We've had gorgeous weather to top off an amazing week, if only we had a few more knots of wind it would be perfect. Even without too much wind though, everyone is working super hard to achieve their levels and their hard work is really paying off! Great job to everyone who will achieve their level tomorrow!

Remember that Term 2 sailing starts THIS weekend, April 29th. If you haven't signed up yet but are interested in either Blue Fleet (social sailing) or in doing your Level 2, 3, or Green Fleet (racing) please let us know asap! You can email me at lts.coach@yacht.org.nz, or call me at 021 216 7522 or book online here to reserve your place: https://typbc.coachseek.com/#/booking/selection
We currently don't have enough people signed up to run the course so please sign up as soon as you can.

Adult Learn to Sail also starts this coming Sunday, April 30th! If you are interested in learning to sail a dinghy, it's never too late! Please sign up online at the same link as above, hope to see you there!

See you on the water!

- Kirsten
