Commodore's Comments

Six of our Optimist sailors have been competing in Picton. Congratulations to Max Scott (14th) Lachlan Dillon (21st), and Andrew Stretton 34th, Anya Pierce (52nd) Sydney Cunliffe (54th) and Robbie Shirley (28th in Silver fleet) With regards to National rankings Max has jumped from 43 to 14, and Andrew Stratton has climbed 10 places too. The Optimist Nationals are in Napier at Easter and count for 60% of the season's rankings and Coach Maria hopes to have 8 of sailors competing. Also competing in Picton was Joel Kennedy in the Starlings who claimed a very creditable 6th. Well done everybody.

The Mike Garner Memorial Race was held for the keelers on Sunday. A bit of local knowledge was needed to guess where the next puff was coming from at times. In the end Manxman and Sniper had a good battle with Manxman taking line and handicap honours.

The Multihull Division tried something new with a race down to Papamoa Domain and back. The idea was to stay close to the beach and give the public a bit of a display on the beach. Winston tells me the event went well and was very enjoyable.

Many of the Centreboard division were racing over at the Hamilton Regatta last weekend and there was no centreboard racing at the Club. I haven’t seen the full results but well done to Hansie Eichholz who cleaned up in the Zephyr fleet and one of our learn to sail kids who took out the Optimist Green fleet trophy – congratulations to Kees McCormick (his parents, and grandfather Mike will be very proud I’m sure).

Keeler Division is considering the best date for the Auckland Tauranga Race in 2018, with a proposal to shift it to Waitangi Weekend. They know there will be plenty of disagreement as to when is best, so if you have an opinion then email it to Andy Kennedy (  aj.mg.kennedy@xtra.co.nz  ).

Nice to hear that the Pacific Rim Regatta is on the radar again with a dates being discussed  in March 2018 for the TYPBC to host this event. A committee has been formed and plans are underway. This is an important event for the TYPBC with many overseas sailors and their partners visiting Tauranga to take part – representing their clubs in the USA, Australia, Russia, Japan and Canada. If you want to get involved contact Delwyn (delwyn26@gmail.com) or Ross (ross.currie@clear.net.nz)

We are still on the lookout for a sponsor for Coaches vehicle – if your business or employer might be interested then either let myself or Lynne in the Office know.

Good luck to Will and Iain on Truxton who are this week setting off in the Two Handed Round North Island Race. You can follow their progress at  http://ssanz.co.nz/  or https://www.facebook.com/search/top/?q=truxton%20sailing

Wenesday night racing...

Race 6 of the Summer Series 2 for keelers on Wednesday night was held in pristine summer weather, the course up and down the Main Channel provided many shifts and holes for passing with the crew workload raised to the highest level with gybes, drops and trimming featuring in the race very often.

Close times featured for Div. 1 & 2 with Whatever & Arethusa taking line and handicap honours. Welcome back to Kaimai Express and La Rochelle who have been enjoying the cruising life since Xmas.

No Regrets took line honours in a close race with Fly Away Sam who won on handicap in Div. 3.

Freedom Express revelled in the conditions to take line and handicap honours in Div. 4.

The multihulls were won by Feisty Feline who managed to find the pressure and shifts around the course best with Spirit winning on handicap, the variable conditions really challenge the quick accelerating Tornados and with 4 keeler fleets sailing the same course made for an interesting contest.

Regards Andy

Waikato thames Regatta...

Cambridge Yacht Club is running the Waikato Thames Regatta on the 18 - 19 March, this will be a fun event at a very popular location. The regatta is the primary fundraiser for the Waikato Thames Yachting Association.

Line 7 has come on board and is supporting us with a bunch of prizes.

It would be great if a few Tauranga boats could head over and join in, accommodation is available at the Lake domain either camping or in chalets.

Hi Sailors,

8 sailors, 7 Optimist Open and one Starling compete on the Picton Ranking regatta last weekend. This was a great regatta for the sailors but also it's an amazing regatta for the parents. Every year the parents enjoy this trip a lot, the weather, the activities and also some wine tasting when the sailors are racing! ;)
TYPBC did very well on this regatta with good results in Optimist and Starling.

Picton ranking regatta
This is a qualifying regatta for the Optimist to represent NZL at international events. Coach: Maria.

Regatta achievements

·      Optimist Open racing: 6. Last season only 3 sailors, season before only 2.

·      Max Scott finish 14 over 120 Optimist. Lachlan Dillon finish 21 and Andrew Stretton 34. Great improvements for Max moving from 43 on his last ranking regatta on Auckland Champs to 14 on this one. The same with Andrew improving 10 places in his National ranking. Well done to Anya, Sydney and Robbie finishing with good results too.

Joel Kennedy finish with a great 6th position on the Starling fleet. Well done. Good way to go for Nationals!

The TYPBC race sailors are now training hard for the OPTIMIST NATIONALS, STARLING NATIONALS and 420 REGIONAL AND NATIONALS REGATTAS! All of these regattas are in two months. A very busy period for the race program now. All the sailors are showing a big commitment and motivation to put the TYPBC flag on the podium! Came to the sailing school and show this junior and youth sailors your support!

Write to me at head.coach@yacht.org.nz (Maria) if you think you can give these great athletes some race tips or support them on any way: 1- Going on the RIB with the coach on a training session. 2-guest speaker night? Usually we do tactics, strategy and rules nights' theory lessons with the sailors. This helps the sailors a lot. 3- We are building the race teams uniforms with some tops that goes on top of the life jacket. This is useful for the coach to recognize them on the water. We are looking some sponsors to cover the cost of the team uniforms.

The learn to sail program is getting very busy too on the Term 1 coaching. See the TYPBC website for the new kids LTS courses starting very soon! The summer hasn't finish yet, now is a great time to start sailing!
Every Sunday we are running an adult learn to sail and an adult level 2 course. Some places available. Come and learn more about dinghy sailing!
