Commodore's Comments

470 National Champs:  Great to see the 470’s have some great sailing at the weekend, I was watching them sailing in front of the Club on Sunday afternoon and they looked to be having some fantastic sailing. It was great to see Sam Barnett and Zak Merton crowned as National Champions on their home waters. Special thanks go to Race Officer Bill Whitiskie and his team, and to John Buck for the use of his launch while the Harry Highet was having a spruce up, and to Nigel Rippey for managing everything on shore.

I forgot to point out last week that the Laser Nationals were taking place in Taupo last weekend. It was pretty windy down there too with the final day of racing cancelled. Well done to Thomas Saunders finishing in 2nd place Richard Wright finishing in 17th in the Laser fleet, and Elly Warren coming in 21st in the Laser Radial fleet.

Starling Match Racing: Joel Kennedy represented the Club. Tina says he found the heavy winds challenging, and he had some breakages too but learnt a lot, and really enjoyed the experience and is looking forward to next year.

Wednesday Night Summer Series continued last night as westerlies continue to dominate our Wednesday evening seascape. Plenty of wind for the most and some exciting sailing.

Wenesday night racing

 Race 2 Summer Series 2

Around 30 boats started the 2nd race for 2017 on the start line set by the Highet at the start of the Otumoetai Channel. High tide allowed a course to take advantage of the harbour’s size with less risk of grounding.

The multi fleet was small with 3 crews contesting the Tornado championships the BOI, Team Seahorse was first with Nacra dnf.

Div 4 was won by Freedom Express online and handicap. Div 3 was won by Fly Away Sam who had a great race winning on line and handicap in conditions that suited them.

Div 2 saw Manxman taking both line and handicap on a course that featured and nice long upwind beat to STO followed by a good kite ride back.

Frenzy had a nice race to take line honours but Sniper won on handicap by 16 seconds in Div. 1.

The Tga-Whitianga race starts on Saturday morning at A Buoy follow the progress using RaceQs link http://raceqs.com/regattas/56111

coach's corner

This week we had 3 of our Junior coach's pop in to give us their take on the week...

We have had an amazing week on the water with a variety of challenging winds the two learn to race sailors I've been coaching are preparing for their first regattas so we have had an exciting week of racing and exploring the harbour.

I had six new entrant sailors who have never sailed before and have improved vastly throughout the week, Nervous at first they can now confidently sail without worry of the water or other hazards, they plan to go venturing out further into the harbour soon

I have had the level two learn to sailors this week, It's been very satisfying to see their improvements day by day. We have been able to cover many aspects of sailing and they have all enjoyed each lesson.
