Commodore's Comments

It seems that each week brings a new face to the team at the Club at the moment and this week it is my pleasure to welcome Lynne Whitaker to the Club. Lynne will be the new Business Development and Club Manager and will be taking up her post from the beginning of December. Many of you may already have met Lynne if you have had any involvement with Tauranga Hockey over the years.
Lynne brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Club and we are delighted that she is joining the management team.

North Island Optimist Championships took place last weekend in New Plymouth. First day was cancelled due to strong winds, second day was big swells and little wind – all quite testing stuff for the young sailors.  Well done to James Barnett (11th) and Lachlan Dillon (13th) who were our top performers in the Gold Fleet.

This weekend sees the keeler and multihull division holding the Windward Leeward series of races on Sunday. Briefing is at 0830hrs. I know that Andy Kennedy is needing some extra pairs of hands to help lay marks etc so please phone him if you can help (ph 0273031477 or email aj.mg.kennedy@xtra.co.nz ).

No Centreboard Summer series this week with the Starling Match Racing Trials on Saturday and the Zephyr North Island Champs taking place in Taupo. Good Luck to all involved.

Commodore’s Comments is being written a couple of days early this week so there is no Wednesday night report from me this week. Results should be on the website and on Facebook, and by the time you read this and I will be wheeling, or more likely wheezing, my way along the Alps to Ocean bike trail.

Good Sailing

Wednesday night Sailing

Summer Series Race 7

38 Boats entered in gusty SW winds that died towards the end of the race making it difficult to finish for the trailing boats.
Sea lettuce was again a real problem with many boats, Rocket Science had to stop and back up at least 3 times.
Whatever, Feisty Feline and Voodoo Lounge both had line and handicap wins, Farr South winning Div. 3 and Itsallgo winning Div. 4 on Handicap.
The Jackpot prize is building for boat crew members, as it hasn’t been struck for the last 3 club nights.

Congratulations with your results at the T393 World Championships in Italy Max Van Der Zalm and Veerle Ten Have. Also for bringing home the Airmiles Trophy for traveling the furthest to compete.

Learn to sail coaches corner

This week saw some great sailing in our Learn to Sail courses. Despite tricky winds and currents, our Saturday class had 15 dedicated Opti and a couple Topaz sailors giving it their all on the water showing great improvements in technique and body position, ready for their final day of the course this coming Saturday. The after school class on Monday did a fantastic job at attempting to battle the strong currents, it gave them some great practice with their upwind sailing and keeping their boom lined up with the corner of their boat. Tuesday after school was a little too rocky to go out, but we managed to practice all our sailing skills on-land and even learned some knots and basic race tactics.

We are looking forward to the Sir Peter Blake Regatta coming up on the weekend of December 3rd. Anyone who wishes to go please remember to contact Mark Wilkins (green fleet class rep) at mark.wilkins@dux.co.nz asap, as registration closes very soon.

We are also starting an Adult Learn to Sail course on the 20th of November. It will take place on Sundays from 9am-12pm and there will be 4 sessions (Nov 20, 27, Dec 11, 18). This course is for beginners who want an introduction to dinghy sailing and for those who would like a refresher or to get more acquainted with dinghies. You can sign up online at https://www.yacht.org.nz/adult_LTS or email tauranga.coach@gmail.com for more details.

Hola sailors,

We have a great Optimist North island regatta! The club took 10 competitive Optimist open sailors to New Plymouth to race last weekend. This is a big amount of sailors and we are happy to see so many sailors on each regatta very kind to travel, compete, get better, learn a lot from each day and a big thing: to represent the TYPBC flag. Great job to all the TYPBC competitor and families that did a big effort to be there.

Tauranga overall results over 93 boats: 4 sailors made gold and 6 finish in the silver fleet.
GOLD fleet
11th James, with two 3rd positions on the races, good job.
13rd Lachlan, with an amazing day today! finishing 6, 5 and 7 on gold fleet, very consistent results.
29th Sydney, with her best result in gold fleet and a 9th on a race. Keep getting those top 10!
45th Andrew
SILVER fleet
3rd Max
16th Teaghan
33rd Monty
34rd Shayna
35th Simon
36th Anya

The TYPBC have amazing results with many Optimist finishing top 10 in many races out of 95 boats! Good job. The first day of racing it was hard for the Tauranga team as they were not too use of racing wit 2,5-3 meters waves. But all the sailors learn a lot from the first day of racing and after sailing wit those different conditions that what we usually have in the Harbour and pretty long coach de-brief, they put all that new learning on the last day of racing! You can see the big improvements from one day to the other with the sailors finish top 10 on the last races.

More big waves practice out of the harbour and the team will be ready for the Opti Nationals in Napier.

The Starlings are doing the Match racing trials this weekend. Hope to see a big group sailors doing the trials.

Keep enjoying, training hard and be the best you can!
