Commodore's Comments

Inn Torbole, Italy, the Techno293 World Championships. TYPBC representatives Max van der Zalm Veerle ten Have have had a great regatta.

Max had the day of his life last Saturday by finishing first three times in choppy conditions and 25kts of wind. He won the silver fleet for boys U17 - with 130 boys sailing in the U17 division. The competition was fierce so it was a very strong performance by Max!! Congratulations to him.

Veerle made it into the gold fleet and finished her worlds in 40th place overall, out of 82 of the world’s best U17 girls. With some outstanding races in strong winds, a stone in the mast track, a black flag and no wind on some days, the learning curve was steep. Well done Veerle!

This week it is my pleasure to welcome Kirsten Moratz to the team at the Sailing School.  Kirsten was originally from north of Toronto in Canada, and did her early sailing on Georgian Bay, which is on the north eastern arm of Lake Huron, in Ontario. More recently she has been sailing 420s and Lasers at Halifax on the east coast. She will join Maria on the coaching team and will look after the learn to sail courses.

It has been all go at the club in the last week with WOW starting their sailing series last week followed by keeler, centreboard and multihull sailing on Sunday.

This week saw 35 boats on the water for the Summer Series with winds a bit heavy for the multihulls. A strong westerly plus an incoming tide made for a bumpy ride up the western channel and quite a few buttock-clenching moments on the spinnaker run back home again with several boats having some spectacular action. Check out Murray de Lues photos on the club website or https://plus.google.com/109401118301148256327

This Friday sees the commencement of the Friday Night Fun Races. If you feel like a bit of a sail on a Friday night then get along to the start at 6pm. Don’t expect to see any results worked out – that’s not what the series is about. But it is the perfect place to unwind from the stresses of the week. Meals will be available in the Club afterwards – but we do ask that you sign on at the Club if possible and give an indication of how many meals you will require.

On the subject of Friday night racing I would like to take this opportunity of thanking Bruce Elder and Bob Shaw for their manning of the Tower for Friday night racing for many years. Unfortunately they have decided to retire this year and we will miss Bruce’s gentlemanly announcements on the vhf and Bobs efficient admin going on in the background. Thanks from all the Friday night sailors.

And while on the subject of the Tower, Bruce Harrison is still keen to hear from anyone will to help in the Tower on Wednesday night. Even if you only wish to do it once or twice a month that is fine, give Bruce a call and have a discussion with him. You can contact him on 027 221 6926 or bjh1900@gmail.com

The popularity of WOW is causing headaches for  Delwyn who organises WOW and the boats for the Thursday night sailing. The problem is that she struggles to have enough boats to put everyone on, especially if a few boats are away for holidays or some other event. So if you can help out then please give Delwyn a call on 0212442040 or email delwyn26@gmail.com There was a great article about WOW in the BOP Times last Saturday which is only likely to make Delwyn’s problems worse as more ladies want to go sailing.

This weekend sees the Optimist North Island Champs at New Plymouth – good luck to all travelling that way.  The Cruising Trailer Yachts have a Picnic Cruise on Saturday (further details from Brent Louden Ph 5763061), and the Steve’s Marine Supplies Centreboard Summer Series continues on Sunday.

Good Sailing

Wednesday night Sailing

Summer Series Race 6

Gusty westerly winds with an incoming tide produced testing conditions for the 35 yachts, too windy for the Multis.

Just before the start, Rocket Science broke its tiller and the helmsman enjoyed a cool dip before being rescued by the Harry Highet.

In Div.1 Time Warp again had a good race to win on handicap with Kaimai Express showing good upwind speed to take line honours, several boats were severely affected by the large amount of sea lettuce along the Main Channel.

Div. 2 & 3 had Voodoo Lounge and Fly Away Sam winning on both line and handicap respectively.

Nine boats started Div. 4 with Freedom Express taking line honours and Itsallgo winning on handicap.

Good Luck to 9 of our sailors are off to New Plymouth this weekend to sail in the Optimist North Island Champs.
