Commodore's Comments

Things are definitely getting busier around the Club as summer continues to approach. About 18 Keelers started from the Club on Sunday for the first of the Steve’s Marine Karewa Series. This was a joint race that was held with the Mount Club. There was a good westerly breeze and it was a fast race with Kaimai Express only taking 2¼ hours. Results were pretty close too – check them out on the website or Facebook page.

Wednesday night saw a light westerly breeze and 37 boats on the water for Race 4 of the Summer Series.  There was not a lot of water in the harbour so only option was for most classes to sail to 10W or 12W and back. The early flood tide helped everyone up to their turning mark then it was a slow run back against the tide with Banks buoy proving challenging for some of the smaller boats. Everyone made it though, and all in all, a very pleasant night on the water with the threatening rain clouds not making it to the southern end of the harbour.

By all accounts Rotorua Sprint Regatta went off well. Three Zephyrs and two multihulls (Stu Pedersen and Lance Putan) made the trip. Vice Commodore Andy Knowles and Hansie Echolz were tied for 2nd (Andy edging ahead on countback), not sure of MH results at this stage.

Functions too have had a busy month. Well done to the team of Ken, Steve, and Jo working hard to create funds to maintain the sailing side of the club.

It is my pleasure this week to welcome Maryanne Morris to the Office team. Maryanne has taken up a bookkeeping role at Club. Maryanne is a keen tennis player and is currently training for the Tarawera 50km ultramarathon!

Coastal Classic yacht race from Auckland to Russell starts on Friday – good luck to the Team on Frenzy, our only entrant this year. Several Keelers heading up the coast this weekend to take part in the Mount Yacht Club’s Legends Regatta, hopefully the sun will shine for that too.

No club racing for centreboarders this weekend, however there will be a destination sail on Sunday (12.30pm briefing) contact mark.wilkins@dux.co.nz for further details.

Have a great long weekend!

Wednesday night Sailing

A light SW wind and overcast skies presided over the 39 yachts on Wednesday Night, the Multis have a nice 5 boat fleet with Feisty Feline taking line honours and Spitfire winning on handicap.
The Div. 4 fleet is ever growing and quite a variety of yachts are competing, Freedom was very fast in these conditions to take Line Honours with Mintaka taking the handicap win.
A large fleet in Div. 3 found the light winds in the lee of Matakana Is to be tricky with No Regrets taking Line and handicap honours.
Div. 2 experienced the same conditions with Sabian keeping well clear to get Line and handicap honours, also.
Kaimai Express and Whatever had a close tussle, with the rest of the fleet relatively close behind. Eventually Whatever took Line honours with Time Warp with a longer rudder winning on Handicap.

wow news

The Women on Water crew had a great turnout for their basic sailing skills night last week.

Fellow sailors generously gave their time to teach the group more about different parts of a boat and what they do, the Tauranga harbour, how to tie different knots, how to operate the radio, use a winch and lots of terminology!

They also had a special surprise - one of their generous sponsors, Trudy from Trudy Calder Pilates, came along to show everyone a few moves to ensure we keep our cores activated while we sail. What a treat!

Centreboard division

To all Sailors,

No Club Racing this long weekend but we will have a Destination Sail planned for this Sunday weather permitting which looks grand in long term forecast.

As usual the destination will be a mystery depending on tide and wind direction. For all our green fleet it really is a really enjoyable event.

Contact Mark Wilkins mark.wilkins@dux.co.nz for all interested.

Be rigged and ready by 12.30 noon for briefing and directions. We also need parents to with patrol boats without them the sail cannot proceed Thanks to Jeff he has already put his name forward.

Coastal classic race

Make sure you follow Frenzy and Truxton during the Coastal Classic on predictWind Tracker starting tomorrow.

Good luck

Big thank you

School team sailing is under way again, which always means a big job getting all the 420s up to scratch and tuned right.  In this regard a HUGE thanks must go to Leanne Warren and Richard Burling, who have spent hours going over every boat, changing setup, getting replacement bits etc.  They just saw that it needed doing and did it!  On behalf of all the school teams, a big thank you from BoPSAT.

We have this week applied to TECT and Lion Foundation for two more new 420s to give us six good boats for the next few years – thanks to Fi Charman for putting that together. Cross your fingers everyone!
