Commodore's Comments

As forecast it was a pretty windy affair for Race 6 of the Burnsco Winter Series for Keelers. Twelve boats crossed the start line. Whatever led the fleet home, followed by Voodoo Lounge and Reloaded. On Handicap the order was reversed with the winner being Reloaded,  followed by Voodoo Lounge with Whatever in 3rd. Two multihulls braved the conditions with only one making it to the finish line, congratulations Team Tigga!

By now you should have received your invoices for subs for the new year that are due for payment by the end of August. As in previous years, your invoice will show an amount (depending on your category of membership) that you may deduct from your invoice if the account is paid by the end of August. Following discussion at the Club AGM it was decided by the Flag Officers to offer an alternative way for members to use this discount. We have offered members the opportunity to invest in our Learn to Sail programme by paying their subscription in full. The Discount will be taken as donation to the Club and a separate receipt will be sent to you for the amount of the discount. This receipt will enable you to claim the 33% Donation Tax rebate for a donation made to a charitable entity. If you do not wish to do this then that is fine, all you have to do is deduct the discount from your invoice, as in previous years. This is all explained on your invoice.

The Flag Officers did this because of requests from members who were keen to see that children continued to have the opportunity to “learn to sail” – something that many of us took for granted.

On Saturday there was a training day for people who intend being involved with helping with Sailability. Thank you to Sailibility Rotorua for bringing over a couple of Hansa 303 boats. Attendees were taught about rigging the boats, transferring people into the boats, and dealing with various health and safety matters that have to be considered. Thanks to Peter Dallimore and his team for organising it all.

Production of the Yacht Club Calendar is well underway. Gun Caundle is kindly managing it this year. Sun Media will be selling the advertising space around the calendar which funds the total production cost of the Calendar. If you own or work for a business which would like to support the Club by taking up one of the advertising slots then please get in touch with the Office and they will pass your details on to Sun Media who will get in touch with you directly.

Fingers crossed for some good sailing this weekend in the Steve’s Marine Winter Series for the centreboarders.

Good sailing.
Nick Wrinch

It's almost that time of year again! This year there won't be an increase in subs so you can expect to pay the same as last year, invoices for the 2016/17 season have been sent out and if you pay before the 31st August 2016 you will receive a discount, you will also have the opportunity to donate your discount back to the club's Sailing School Fund - see your invoice for details. Please contact the office if you have not received your subs renewal invoice.

Farm & Trail in Te Puke have put together a basic maintenance course that could be of benefit to our members.

This course is not designed to conflict with Coastguard training courses as it has been structured to be a very basic introduction to maintenance available to Coastguard members and non-Coastguard members and with no certificate being offered. The course is 2hrs covering general outboard principles, outboard and vessel systems re fuel, electrical cooling, transmissions, trim and tilt, trailer maintenance, trouble shooting, spares and tools. The course fee is $25 per person and will take place at 9.30am on 3,10,17&24 Sept.

Obviously a fair bulk of Coastguard call outs are due to breakdowns and we believe a course such as this could help alleviate the unnecessary call outs and possibly save lives.

For more information and to book yourself on the course please contact: Mark Mear at Farm & Trail at  2103 State Highway 2, Te Puke. Ph (07) 573 3999, Mobile 022 1911 679.
