Vice Commodore's Comments

First of all this week I have to pass on the sad news of Ainara Adler, who passed away on Monday night. She was the youngest daughter of Alfredo and Christie Adler, who are parents in the Centreboard division. Our thoughts and condolences are with them at this very sad time.
The Burnsco Winter Series for Keelers and Multihulls got underway on Sunday with 21 boats coming to the line with all divisions sailing the same course out to A Beacon then sailing up the harbour to 12W before returning to the Club. Conditions had been forecasted to worsen during the day but in the end conditions were not too bad and little rain. The course proved varied and challenging with the most of multihulls spending a lot of time on just one hull.
Whatever led the keeler fleet taking Line Honours ahead of Sniper and Voodoo Lounge, but overall the Div 2 boats took the chocolates with Candela first, Flashback second, and Gate Crasher third on handicap. Reloaded was the first Div 1 boat on handicap, followed by Fast Lane and General Jackson.
In the Multihulls Spitfire was ‘on fire’ taking line and handicap honours in what looked like a fast and furious race for them.
Saturday night was Quiz night at the Club and a good night was had by all despite a few technical hitches. Eight teams took part with congratulations to Tony Kennedy and his team of ‘Mad Hatter’ Engineers who cleaned up. A good sum of money was raised to assist the funding of Joel Kennedy and Lachlan Dillon who are on their way to Sri Lanka to take part in the Asia Oceania Games between May 25th and June 5th. Good luck to them and their team, we will have more news on their progress next week. Or follow them at http://www.optiworld.org/default/events/event/text/2016-optimist-asian-oceanian-championship/page/0
Centreboard Winter Series continues this week, with the Centreboard AGM coming up on June 7th.

Good sailing.

Keelers Winter series

Sunday saw the Start of the Keeler Winter Series with a great turn out.

You can watch the start of the race on our facebook page,

click on the photo to follow the link.

The Kennedy and Dillon families would like to say a big thank you to all their friends, co-workers and family who came and supported The Quiz night fundraiser. Joel, Lachlan and the other 8 sailors have landed safely and are now currently soaking up the rays in Sri Lanka. Thank you also to Steve and Jo for helping run a smooth night. Very much appreciated. Winners of the quiz night were " The Mad Hatters"  who donated there prize of $100 liquor land gift card back to the event for auctioning. Well done TMH and thanks so much.

Multihull winter series

The multihull fleet will be out in force this winter series, but with Jason and Phil not able to race last Sunday, we had four Tornado’s and one F18, including two new crew from the centreboard division, Braedon and Harry.  Starting first, we did the same course as the keelboats and were shadowed by our own safety boat.
Winston and Harry on Spitfire showed everyone a clean pair of heels for a deserved win, and Bruce and Braedon sailed well too to come in third on line and second on handicap.  Feisty Feline managed an elegant dismount and capsize outside the entrance but sneaked past Touch’n’Go and Tigger in very light and fickle puffs to round mark 12 in second and carry that to the finish.  Tigger may have been weighed down by GoPro, ghetto-blaster and beers, but is always bouncy.

All in all a great start to the season.

Stuart Pedersen

Thank you academy cars

A big thank you to Kelvin and Dean at Academy Cars.
The car that Maria has been using this year has been returned to Academy Cars at 9th Ave.
It has been seen extensively around Tauranga and New Zealand and has been a huge help to the Sailing School Programme.

Hola sailors!

This Saturday will be my last coaching day in Tauranga so I hope to see you all here to enjoy the sailing, the beautiful Tauranga harbour and for sure the great Autumn wind coming on Saturday afternoon This will be a great training session.
It was a huge pleasure to work with you one more year. I have been here for like 9 months this season, I can feel my kiwi ascent now!
I am taking a big amount of great memories from this season. It’s sad to be leaving this nice place with so many good people. However I know that we leave everything set and ready to run a very successful winter program!
We have been working for days organizing the Autumn and winter groups, setting the courses, training and running coaches clinics and coaches workshop for the TYPBC club coaches. This club coaches get all the knowledge and skills necessary to delivery the best winter program at the TYPBC.
Thank you once again to all the sailors, families, club members, coaches and all the people working with me during this season. Its always a pleasure to see the sailors progressing year by year at the club, to see and meet new sailors and families joining the sailing school every year. And also to see the more experienced sailors that I coach getting into their sailing coaching career, helping them to develop as a coach and to enjoy this profession as much as I do.
All the best for this huge winter sailing program coming up, enjoy it!
Some international news…
The TYPBC Optimist arrive at the Asian and Oceanian Championships in Sri Lanka. All the best to Joel Kennedy and Lachlan Dillon!
We have had a very busy last week!:
A very successful coaches workshop and coaches clinic was run last Saturday at TYPBC. Five TYPBC coaches plus one Australian coach attended the workshop, They were Hannah Spencer, Tom Maidment, Nimah Dillon, Richard Wright and Braedyn Denney.
During the morning the coaches have a coaching session working with a group of green fleet sailors on the water. This was very useful for me to evaluate these coaches in action. During the afternoon I run a theory session for the coaches. Very useful time to talk about:
1- Health & safety and club safety procedures
2- What drills to do on the water and on the land when its very light or very windy conditions
3- Training drills
4- Running safety sessions
5- Monthly and daily planning
6- Some key points about optimist race coaching
Thank you for all the club coaches for coming showing so much motivation and enthusiasm during the course, It was a perfect opportunity for them to get ready for the winter coaching season starting this month.
And now what’s next?....
Get ready for great training, coaching and racing on the following months. We were working hard on the last days to plan and organize the TYPBC winter sailing program and try to cover everybody needs in all the different levels.
