Vice Commodore's Comments

It was great to see such a good turn out from all divisions for the Annual Prize Giving on Friday. The Club was packed and it was good to see all our prize winners picking up their trophies. Congratulations to all of them and their support Teams.

Some more sad news this week with the passing of David Braid on Tuesday. David built an alloy yacht “Bopsy” in the late 70’s and many of our current members sailed with him. Thank you to Alec McNaull for letting us know. More details below.

Excellent news with Peter Burling and Co. winning the latest round of Americas Cup racing in New York. While I thought the TV coverage could have been better, it did make for some interesting viewing, and it was interesting to note that even Peter needs a bit of luck occasionally!

Further good news on the Olympic selection front came with the announcement of Sam Meech’s selection as the Laser Class rep for NZ in Rio. Congratulations to him from all at the Club.

It is the season of AGMs. The Keeler and Trailer Yacht Divisions have had theirs this week, and the Centreboard Division have their one on Tuesday, 7th June. The Club AGM is a little later this year and takes place on Tuesday, 12th July at 7.30pm.

For all those who were looking to impress at the Quiz Night on Saturday night, the good news is that you have an extra week to get the brain cells finely tuned. The fundraising event for the youth sailors travelling to the Asian Games has been put back to Saturday, 21st May.

Winter Series racing kicks off this weekend with the Centreboard Division, and the Keelers and Multihulls on Sunday, 22nd June. Details on the website or from your Division Chairperson.

Good sailing.

Hola sailors!

Thank you so much for coming to the Summer Series Centreboard Division Prize Giving last Friday. It was awesome to see so many people there, sailors, kids, parents and families. Thank you again for all your support during this season. We really enjoy working with you and with all the sailors.

I am looking forward to seeing all the sailors coming this Sunday to the first Winter Series club races for the centreboard division. Will be great to see all the race sailors here and all the new sailors that are coming from the Learn to Sail programme too. Please visit the TYPBC website to download the winter series sailing instructions.

As part of the sailing programme we are very happy to continue offering a race training programme and coaching sessions to all the sailors of all the different levels. We have organised the winter training on every 2nd Saturday from 1-5pm. I have sent this information by email but please let me know if you didn't receive this or if this training doesn't suit you. Well known yachtsman David Braid passed away on Tuesday after a long illness. David built his alloy yacht BOPSY in the late 70s and many of our current members sailed with him including Wayne Eaton and Gary Smith. He also navigated many yachts in overseas races including Merv Halsey's De la mer, Les DeLacey's Puppet and John Warren's Triomphe which sank on the return trip from Norfolk Island, they were picked up by a Russian freighter and  retuned to Maunganui safe and sound. Dave is survived by his wife Rose and his two daughters Carolyn and Paulette. Braidy you will be missed.
