Vice Commodore's Comments

First of all some very sad news this week with the passing of John Knotts on Monday.  John was a former Flag Officer who did a great deal for the Club. His funeral is on Wednesday 11th May at 11am at Legacy Funerals in Pyes Pa. Our thoughts are with his wife Jackie and family at this sad time.

A big Thank You to the Team that turned up on Saturday morning and did a fantastic job mowing, cleaning, clearing out and generally sorting the different areas of the Club “Downstairs”. There was a great turn-out of people who got stuck in and made the place look spick and span. As a pre-dominantly keeler sailor, seeing the goings-on of the Centreboard division is fascinating and quite mind blowing. Greg Scott and his team put a huge amount of energy into the running of the division.  It is very impressive and a great credit to the Club.

It is this energy which has resulted in some great results for the NZL Sailing Team at the Sailing World Cup Hyeres in France. It is easy to take for granted the brilliant performance of Peter Burling and Blair Tuke in the 49er class, but once again they dominated from the start. I personal was very pleased with myself, that while mindlessly channel surfing on Sunday evening that I came across live TV coverage of the Lasers’ medal race. Sailed in very variable conditions it was fantastic to see Sam Meech finish in 3rd place and secure the Silver Medal for the regatta. More Tauranga representation with Alex Maloney and Molly Meech finishing 9th in the 49erFX, Gemma Jones and Jason Saunders finishing 11th in the Nacra 17 and Andrew Murdoch finishing 12th in the Finn. Congratulations to everyone.

A Patrol Boat Course is being run on 25th June. Please book your place as soon as possible because places are filling fast and numbers are limited. Get in touch with Greg Scott or the office to book your spot.

On Saturday 14th May a Quiz Night is being held at the club to raise funds for our Optimist sailors going to the Asian Games in Sri Lanka. Bar will be open from 6pm with Bar snacks available, and the Quiz starts at 7.30pm. This is a great opportunity to support some of our up and coming sailors.

Work is still on-going regarding the Club’s Facebook page. Currently there are up to four pages relating to the Club. Two of the pages have not been used for a long time and they will hopefully be shut down once we have found out who set them up in the first place. In time everything will come under the one page with the name “Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club – TYPBC”. So if you are a Facebook user, make sure this is the page that you “Like”. Do NOT be tempted by two similar pages with the names: “Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club”, or “Tauranga Yacht & Power Boat Club – TYPBC”. If anyone knows who set these pages up please could they contact the Office or myself. The “Harry Highet Typbc” page will be discontinued soon, so you need to switch to the new page.

For a number of years I have been responsible for putting together the Club Calendar. This involves co-ordinating input from the various divisions into an excel spreadsheet then sending off to Sun Media for publishing. Sun Media do all the hard work of finding the advertisers and I have really enjoyed doing it each year. But with increased duties at the Club I feel it is time that I passed the job on. So if anyone is interested please could they get in touch with me or the office. In all truth it is really easy and very satisfying, and, of course, I’m really happy to help someone learn the ropes.

Don’t forget Prize Giving this Friday. As I said last week a really important time for all the divisions to get together and appreciate all the good stuff that goes on in our Club. Food is available from 6pm with proceedings getting underway from 7pm.

Good sailing.

Hi sailors,

We would like to invite all the race sailors to the TYPBC Summer Series Centreboard Division Prize Giving. Many sailors will receive their prizes and also certificates from me. It will be a great moment to celebrate together this successful summer season. Very busy, with many TYPBC sailors traveling to lots of regattas and the sailors performing to the top national level! The students will also travel to international competitions with some qualifying to be part of the NZ Opti teams and represent TYPBC at international regattas. Well done to all the sailors on the last intensive months!

The summer season has finished but we didn't notice that too much as we have continued running courses with lots and lots of sailors, sometimes into the night! From new sailors that want to learn how to sail in autumn up to race performance sailors training in our intensive race programmes.

A very successful Tauranga Autumn Training Camp!
26 sailors came to our Tauranga Autumn Training Camp during five days of intensive sailing last week. Taking the sailors for a run and fitness every morning and training during many hours during the day was a perfect learning week for all to improve their sailings skills and to take the most from the camp. The camp finished with a fun sleep over on Friday night. Thanks to all the sailors that came to the course and to the race camp and their parents for helping organising. We had from very light to very windy training days and lots of fun. Follow all the action in photos on the TYPBC Facebook page. Thank you coaches: Luka, Coral, Elly and Richard. Great job!

Laser training
It was a pleasure to be working with a group of Lasers last week. Great to have Blake Woodfield from Taupo training here with us too. It was a very competitive team where we focused on speed, boat handling and starts. With Auckland confirmed for 2016 Youth Sailing World Championships I am sure that these young Laser sailors will be working towards doing the trials in October. The 2016 Youth Sailing World Championships is also for other classes such as 420, 29er and others.

Adult training course
We have had perfect weather for the Adult training course last weekend. There are still some places available in the course. If you want to learn how to sail, or you are am advanced sailor who wants to get more dinghy sailing, come and join in.

Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow night at the Prize Giving! Start at 7pm.

Adios, nos vemos pronto.
