Vice Commodore's Comments

Nigel is away for a few weeks so I will be stepping into his shoes.
The Keelers are between seasons at the moment with their Winter Series beginning on May 22, so no news from them. But the Centreboarders have been as busy as ever.

We had a team of four at the Starling Nationals in Lyttelton where the conditions were quite varied. Congratulations to Jason Hewitt for his performance in winning the Cooke Trophy for winning the Qualifying Series. Jason sails for Hamilton and TYPBC and does a lot of his racing in Tauranga. Well done to the Team which was well supported by coach Maria at the Naval Point Club.

Meanwhile the Zephyr Nationals were held last weekend at Manly Sailing Club. There was a very strong contingent of 10 boats from Tauranga in a huge fleet of 86 Zephyrs. Top TYPBC boat on this occasion was Mark Thomas in Black Pearl. Mark finished 6th overall and won the Masters 50-59 Age Group. Well done to him and to all our other sailors who had, by all accounts a very enjoyable championship.

At Murrays Bay at the weekend were the RS:X & Techno Nationals. Alex Hart won the U21 division of the RS:X Nationals and congratulations to all the other TYPBC boardsailors  (Veerle ten Have, Dolf ten Have, Max van der Zalm and Olly Maidment)  who all won their respective divisions!

Prizegiving is fast approaching, so make sure that Friday May 6th is in your diary, starting at 7pm, with food available from 6pm.  This is a really important time for the different divisions to come together and acknowledge those who have done well during the course of the season.

Also coming up on the calendar are the Divisional AGMs which take place in May or June. Make sure you turn up to support your division and have your input as to how the division progresses next season. It's very important that there is a constant flow of new people through the divisions with new ideas and new energy to drive the various divisions forward in the future. Beyond that we have the TYPBC AGM coming up on July 12th. In Nigel’s absence, Gary Smith and I will be accepting nominations for the Club Yachtsperson of the Year, and nominations for Life Membership. Please give your consideration to this.

Don’t forget Centreboard Winter Series starts on May 15th, details below.

We were very sorry to hear this week of one centreboard family who are going through an incredibly tough time at the moment. Young Ainara Adler is suffering from a serious heart condition. She has a Givealittle page for those who would like to donate to help the family through this difficult time.

Good sailing

Hi sailors,
We will like to invite you to the barbecue and sleepover night on this Friday night. It will be a fun event and a great way to finish our coaching summer season. (We will run team building activities, International Ping-Pong championship: Argentina Vs NZL haha, Rugby games…you will be better on this! and a scout fire if we can). On Friday we plan to come back from the water at 4pm from the training camp and then have a barbecue at 6:30pm. Please bring:
- Sleeping bag , ground sheet and some thermals just in case.
- Something you like to eat to put in the barbecue and some salad if you like.
- Some breakfast for the next day if you want to have breakfast at the club.
The event will finish on Saturday at 9am so parents please pick the sailors from the club at this time. Matt Towers and Greg Scott have offered to be camp dads during the night but if any other parent wants to stay you are welcome to. From Maria

Hi everyone

We have been busy this week with coaching 26 students from the LTR and Open fleets in preparation for the upcoming CB Winter Series and with the help of some of our TYPBC youth sailors. Thank you Luka, Coral, Elly, Jason and Richard. I have also been coaching three keen youth Laser sailors. I look forward to seeing you all for the BBQ Sleepover tomorrow night!

Check out Christine's cool video here of the Orca that visited the harbour yesterday and then later swam through my fleet of sailors giving the kids a bit of a fright!!!
