Commodore's Comments

Last weekend saw some great racing in the P Class Wihau Shield for the first time it has been contested since 1997. Greg Scott hunted out the impressive trophy which started back in the 1940s from Rotorua and has resurrected the series. Thanks to Greg for organising the regatta and his passion for the mighty P Class. The fleet of 18 boats had 4 fleet races on Saturday. Then on Sunday the top 5 raced in each other's boats for the Top 5 results while the remainder of the fleet battled it out for the Secretaries Cup in their own boats. Joel Kennedy managed to finish 1 point ahead of James Barnett to take 1st. Lachlan Dillon was 3rd. Niamh Dillon was 1st Girl and 1st in the Secretaries Cup. Well done to all.

Good luck to the sailors and coach Maria who are heading down to Christchurch for the Starling Nationals this weekend.

Congratulation to Joel Kennedy and Lachlan Dillon, who have been selected to represent TYPBC and New Zealand at the Asian Optimist Champps in Sri Lanka. This is an awesome result for our guys. Good luck for this notoriously tough regatta.

Peter Burling and Blair Tuke have made an impressive start to be clear leaders at the 49er European Champs in Barcelona. Molly Meech and Alexandra Maloney in the 49er FX are also looking good in 5th heading into the gold fleet racing for the regatta.

This Sunday sees the final and closing day race for the Keelboats with a race out to Karewa. If it's light the clubhouse start maybe moved out to A buoy so check on Sunday.

The Winter Series for Keelers and Trailer Yachts will start on 22nd May. The tower crews are looking for more volunteers to help out starting the racing every second week, so please let the office know if you are free to help sometime. Thanks to all those who have worked in the tower this season, you have all done a great job. The centreboarder's Winter Series starts on 15th May.

Coming up on the 30th April we have another Working Bee day at the club. It’s a great time to have a good tidy up after a busy season. Please put it in your diary.

Good sailing.
Nigel Rippey

Are you looking for something different to do this school holidays? Whether you’re a novice sailor keen to learn a new skill, or an experienced racer ready for an intensive week, we run a variety of programmes over the school holidays. Our courses are fun, safe and fully supervised by qualified and experienced instructors. With Tauranga’s stunning harbour location and sea breeze, there isn’t a better place to learn sailing. So don’t let the kids sit in front of the TV all holidays, get out and get sailing.

We still have some spaces available for you to join us. Read more here.
