Commodore's Comments

Sadly Alice Armstrong has returned to Ireland after a very successful season here managing our Learn to Sail through to Learn to Race courses for kids and adults. Alice started back in September and has seen 300 participants in her varied courses since then. We thank Alice for all her hard work and passion for the season and wish her all the best for her next season of coaching in Ireland. Alice has also been assisted with our youth coaches who have done a great job.

Last weekend the centreboarders had their last race day for the season. Warren was away so Peter and Raewyn Blackie offered their gin palace as start boat for the day. The shifty breeze kept race officer Pete on his toes once it had filled in. It was a great afternoon of sailing finished off with the traditional P Class capsize race, which was won by Lachlan Dillon. The Zephyrs had some more good racing and training for their up and coming Nationals this month in Manly. Thank you to Warren Belk for once again running our summer series of racing. Warren gives the centreboard division a huge amount of time, effort and support, to all our kids through to our Zephyr sailors. We are very grateful!!

Women on Water also had their final race day with a Mark Foy start off the club. A good fleet of boats struggled out the entrance in the light conditions, only to meet a rainsquall and some good breeze. The rain moved on and the day was awesome for the finish at the club. Great to see the enthusiastic ladies as they crossed the finish line. Well done to Paulien Chamberlain (nee Eitjes) and her crew onboard Freedom Express on winning the race with a comfortable margin and the overall series. I gave La Rochelle’s crew the best dressed!! See story below.

The Secondary Schools Teams Racing Regional Champs was held this week in Taupo. There was a great turn-out of 3 teams from Tauranga and for some it was their first time at regionals. Well done to all. See story below.

Please put the TYPBC annual Prize Giving night in your diaries. All divisions are celebrating the season gone and handing out the trophies on Friday evening 6th May. There will be dinner from 6pm and Prize Giving starts at 7.

Good sailing.

Last Sunday saw the last of the WoW races completed in light winds and all seasons in one day. We had an eventful race out to A Beacon battling the tide through the entrance and the ship traffic on the way back, then raced back to 12W and then to the finish. Paulien Chamberlain (nee Eitjes), Leisa Managh and Christine Headey onboard Freedom Express were first back followed by Whatever and Sniper. General Jackson was first back in the cruising division. At the end of the 9 race series where 7 races were completed and some 80 ladies crewed the five boats in the racing division and 8 boats in the cruising division, Freedom Express came out on top with Whatever 2nd and Sniper 3rd. Well done to all the ladies. Thank you to those in the Tower, the WoW volunteers, sponsors and boat owners.

Holiday Courses
Are you looking for something different to do this school holidays? Whether you’re a novice sailor keen to learn a new skill, or an experienced racer ready for an intensive week, we run a variety of programmes over the school holidays. Our courses are fun, safe and fully supervised by qualified and experienced instructors. With Tauranga’s stunning harbour location and sea breeze, there isn’t a better place to learn sailing. So don’t let the kids sit in front of the TV all holidays, get out and get sailing. Dates: 25th -29th April, Times: 10am-3pm .

This course is open to all sailors Level 1-3, including beginners up to those in the green fleet. These are for sailors of any level and we are particularly keen to see new faces and old ones too. The holiday courses are great for beginners who want to learn sailing and equally good for those who want to practice and get more time on the water. The aim is to have fun!
