Commodore's Comments

In the last couple of weeks our club has had lots of sailors away at regattas around the country and now overseas, coming up with some great results.

Tom Maidment held his composure at the Starling Match Racing Nationals in Auckland last weekend to win the title ahead of Zoe Bennett. Tom was up against 10 of the best regional representatives and two days of fierce match racing. See full story here.

We had five sailors at the Laser Nationals in Muritai in windy Wellington. As predicted the breeze was very strong for several days causing delays in racing. In the 10-race series Dylan McKinlay was our top sailor with an 8th overall. Jason Hewitt finished 11th, Richard Wright 22nd, John Barnett 27th and Elly Warren 32nd.

Sam Barnett and Zak Merton have sailed a great 470 Nationals in Manly, Auckland, finishing 3rd overall. Top Kiwi sailors Paul Snow Hansen and Dan Wilcox were 1st and Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie 2nd. The 470 fleet attracted 12 boats including two from Korea here training for the summer.

We also have a team of sailors in Miami competing at the World Cup event at the moment. Sam Meech and Tom Saunders are in the Lasers, Jason Saunders and Gemma Jones sailing the Nacra 17, Trent Rippey and Isaac McHardie sailing the 49er and Molly Meech and Alex Maloney in The 49er FX. Good luck to the team. See story below.

Wednesday night racing saw some tight racing at the start including one unfortunate collision resulting in damage to Whatever who had to retire from the race. The first beat was very busy with low tide and the dredge working in the channel. Very light conditions and an incoming tide made for a long race and the fleet spreading out. Frenzy made the most of the conditions to break away and get flushed home with the tide to win by a big margin. Only 14 finished from a fleet of 38 starters. In Div 1 Frenzy was 1st on line and 1st corrected. Div 2 Rocket Science was 1st on line and corrected. Div 3 Synchronicity was 1st on line and corrected. Div 4 Keewee also took the double. The Tornado fleet had a good race after Warren finished them on the water. Spirit sailed well to win on the water but sailed on the wrong side of a mark. So 1st on line was Wild Thing and Touch and Go was 1st on corrected. See full results here.

We are really sad to see Emma Geary having to leave her coaching job and us here at the club. Emma’s grandmother is not well so she has returned to Ireland to be with her. Emma has done a great job in the short time she had, we wish her all the best.

Good luck to all those racing to Whitianga this Saturday. It sounds like a good fleet of boats will be at the start at A Buoy 0800 hrs. We hope most boats will be using RaceQs tracking. To watch the progress from home go to the link here.

Well done Sam Barnett and Zak Merton on finishing 3rd at the recent 470 Nationals held at Manly last week.

The regatta is a mainstay on the winter circuit for sailors who are campaigning for the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Sailing Competitions. More than 780 athletes are featured across the ten Olympic and two Paralympic events from 25-30 Jan and is an Olympic qualifier for North and South America the stakes are high at the regatta.

TYPBC sailors are currently lying 37th in the 49er with Isaac McHardie and Trent Rippey, 1st in the 49erFX for Alex and Molly, 7th for Thomas Saunders and 9th for Sam Meech in the Lasers and Jason Saunders and Gemma are lying 14th in the Nacra. Most classes have raced 6-9 races so far.

Below is the RaceQs link for the Whitianga race, this should allow yachts to be followed up the coast on Saturday by onshore yachties, the boats can pre-set their start time when setting it up, they must enable the live streaming option (somewhere near the start page), have their mobile data switched on (minimal data is used), the phones should be connected to a power source for this length of race and I hope it all works,

Maria's Race Coaching

Hi race sailors!
First and foremost congratulations to Tom Maidment in his victory at the Starling match racing nationals where he represented our club and the bay of plenty region.

We are very happy and busy organising and preparing for the Auckland Champs being held in Maraitai this year. A large group of nine Opti sailors will be representing our club this year along with representatives in the Starling and Laser fleets. They have been training and preparing this week and the club sends their best of luck to all the sailors participating. Thank you Coral Headey for being my boat driver whilst I have had a twisted ankle this week my recovery is slow but steady. I would also like to thank the parents of our young sailors for helping organise the Tauranga team to go to Auckland Champs this year your help has made it possible for a lot of young sailors to be able to participate this year.

Thank you also to John Revington and Nigel Rippey for helping us organise our successful summer programme which has seen lots of young kids experience the joy of sailing. The club is giving amazing support to our young sailors. We hopefully look forward at a successful and exciting Term 1 with lots of training and fun activities each week.

The Term 1 training schedule and information will be emailed out shortly. If you  have any concerns please let me know. Happy sailing!
