Commodore's Comments

We had a great turn out of volunteers for both the Saturday and Sunday of the City to Surf. The club has been doing this for many years now and it seems to get smoother each time. I understand there were approximately 2000 entered in the event, no wonder it took so long to fill the entry packs! The Sunday was a stunning day and it was awesome to see so many start including a lot of late entries. Thanks to all the club helpers again. Great job done and a bonus as a fundraiser for the club.

Saturday saw 5 boats turn up for the Major Island race. It was a nice day for a trip to Mayor with a good but dying breeze as the day went on.  Andy Knowles and crew on Time Warp had an awesome race, taking just on 3 hours with the gennaker on to win on line and corrected time. General Jackson finished close behind in 2nd on the line and 2nd on corrected time. The new PIC–North Sails spinnaker won at the Auck Tauranga race seems to be working well for General Jackson! Sniper was 3rd and 3rd. The race home in a dying breeze was abandoned after a slow start.

On Sunday the centreboard fleet had a stunning day and sailed 3 races. There was a good fleet of P Class out with several optimist sailors enjoying the new challenge of sailing the P. It is good to see the fleet growing each week as we get into summer. The Zephyr fleet will be back up to numbers with the warm weather and the great encouragement they all get from Andy Knowles!

This weekend we have several sailors heading to the Winter Champs at MBSC. Good luck. Also in Auckland next week the Youth selection trials start on Tuesday. Good luck to our sailors vying for a youth spot.

A fleet of 31 boats went out for the first Wednesday night series for the summer. A light northerly and plenty of tide saw shortened courses. The first start for the series had several boats getting pretty excited and unfortunately Arethusa and General Jackson had a bump. Several boats found the bottom and some more than once. Time Warp got caught on camera with the crew trying to tip her over enough to get off (see below). Frenzy was back on the water after a repaint and some refitting and looking very dangerous, wining on line and corrected time. Whatever was 2nd and Sniper, after a great start, was 3rd. Div 2 was lead home by Rocky, 1st line and corrected, Rocket Science 2nd, line and corrected and No Regrets 3rd on line with Jet Stream 3rd on corrected. In Div 3 Ffaux Pas was 1st on both, then the Bax Brothers in Syncronicity 2nd on both followed by High Point 3rd on line and September Blue 3rd on corrected. The Tornados had a good race with Feisty Feline 1st and Relentless  2nd. See full results here.

Commodore's Pick of the Week:
Wednesday night racing saw most boats taking it very close to the rounding marks. None closer than Frenzy though!
Question: If a crew “high Fives” the channel mark on the way past, has that “boat touched the mark”?  Yeah or Nah?

Good sailing.

Hi sailors!

We have had a big sailing week here at the club. Alice is running a successful Learn to Sail course every afternoon and a Refresher course every morning. Many kids have attended the spring holidays courses so that's fantastic.

Next week Alice will be running a Better Sailing course. Some places still available so please contact her if you are interested to tauranga.coach@gmail.com or 022 085 3143.

BETTER SAILING COURSE NEXT WEEK Information: Places still available Better Sailing is aimed at children aged 8–15 years old who have completed their Learn to Sail course and want to continue sailing without the competitive aspect of racing. Participants will improve upon skills learnt in their first level and will learn advanced boat handling and seamanship skills. On completion of the course participants will be able to rig, launch and sail independently, as well as skills such as stopping, speed control, sailing backwards and manoeuvring in close quarters. Time: 10am-1pm, Dates: Tuesday 6th Oct. - Friday 9th Oct.  Price: $150 per child including boat hire, Siblings get a 10% discount, $120 per child when providing own boat.
The racing sailors also had a big race training camp during this week on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. A six hour lesson and 4 hours on the water training this was a great warm up for the next regattas. A good group of 13 sailors come for this race training in Optimist, P Class, Starling and Laser. Good to see many Lasers starting training during this Spring! I hope to run another performance sailing course next week from Monday to Wednesday. I will send an email out to you all so I can get an idea of the number of sailors who want to train.

I´m off to Murrays Bay today to attend the ¨Stack Winter Champs¨, looking forward to seeing our sailors out on the water!

After school coaching in Term 4, please email me to let me know if you will be registering! I also need to know those sailors who will be going to Auckland North Island Champs and Starling regatta in Napier.

Chau navegantes, nos vemos en el agua!

This year there will be live coverage via RaceQs.com, this will show all participating yachts out there on the harbour close
to real time so followers will be able to see where the boats are during the race from their computer. The service is free and boats need to download the free app onto their smartphones via RaceQs.com.
