Commodore's Comments

It was another, sometimes frustrating race for the Burnsco Keeler Winter Series last Sunday with the breeze dying on some parts of the course. The weather still made for a nice day to be on the harbour. 14 boats arrived at the start line. No Regrets took off over the sandbank to come out with a good lead at the first mark. The wind came and went several times during the race. Some crews started early on the refreshments and the before and after photos can be seen.

There was a restart at 10W after 2 and half hours drifting pleasantly around the harbour, and with a 20 knot SW wind change, the fleet came home in a close huddle. Frenzy was first home, Sniper 2nd and Voodoo 3rd. Frenzy was 26mins behind on corrected time from the winner Candela who was first on Corrected time followed by Gate Crasher and then Rascal Tom. The was a very uncharacteristic mistake with the spinnaker hoist on Whatever which slowed them down. Of course Gary Smith was on hand with his camera. See the photo below! The last Burnsco Winter series race for the keelboats is in 2 weeks on 23rd August.

This weekend sees the final winter training day on Saturday and the final race for the Burnsco CB Winter Series and this will be followed with the prize giving. There are trophies for the first in each division and spot prizes, so lets see you there.

AIMs Games Yachting is not far away now. Yachting starts on Saturday 5th September and finishes on the 8th. It will be the biggest fleet of Optimists we will have had racing on Tauranga harbour. We have 65 Optimist sailors coming from around the country to race for the first medals to be presented for yachting at the AIMs Games. The sailing is going to attract plenty of media coverage newspapers and with Rawdon Christie (who’s son is racing), Sam Kelway and Sam Wallace from TV 1 morning show coming to report from the club. I just hope Sam will have some favourable weather to report!!  Saturday we have registration and safety checks, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday racing. So I think it is going to great regatta and interesting for everyone to come a see unfold. Thank you to all those who are helping out for the regatta. If you do want to be involved please let me know.

Good sailing.
Nigel Rippey
