Commodore's Comments

An awesome day greeted the keelboats for the Burnsco Marine Winter Series last Sunday, warm and sunny for a change but painfully light breeze.
17 boats turned up on the start line for 1 to 2 knots of NNW with an incoming tide (see photos below).

Once again Frenzy got clear after an average start and lead the fleet around through the entrance closely followed by No Regrets who won the start! Most of the fleet made it into the Western Channel and hit boat speeds of over 5 knots (over the ground), including 3 knots of tide flow!! A bit of a restart at 12W as the fleet turned for home. Frenzy went looking for a new channel on the south side of High Beacon, and yes Roger confirms there is not enough water to sail there… They were the first to start their motor to head home, followed by the rest of the fleet when the breeze died. September Blue had a great sail and finished with only a minute or so to go for their time limit.
“Will this be the day Tuke and Burling get Beaten” was the headlines! (49er.org report after penultimate day). It’s been almost an entire quadrennial since Peter Burling and Blair Tuke stood anywhere but the top of the podium after a regatta.  They stood second in London, joyful of their Silver Medals but determined to improve the result. Since then it’s been 17 victories in a row, a record for any 49er sailor of any era, one that is in jeopardy on the final day of racing at the 2015 49er European Championship in Porto.  Just a day ago, the record looked set to continue, with Burling and Tuke having a solid day in Gold fleet when nobody else could and clearing almost 20 points into the lead. Read this exciting commentary in full on our website here as Burling and Tuke bounce back from disqualification to win the Europeans. Congratulations!!

Thanks to Richard Burling for keeping us updated.

Good sailing
