The 2017 Winter Series Race Entry

Matakana Classic 2015

MATAKANA CLASSIC 2014 (resailed in 2015)

On a fantastic calm Saturday six Tornado Catamarans took off from the TYPBC in the early afternoon to contest the 2014 Matakana Classic. A non stop loop around Matakana Island, the fleet headed up the inside of the harbour in light conditions.

Julian and Tom on AON Racing recovered from a late start to lead the fleet out the Bowentown entrance, Gennakers' up, each boat tried to pick the smoothest course across the bar. Myself and my crew Chris only had one breaking wave we had to punch through.

The wind picked up on the outside and a lumpy sea made for a fast and wet ride. Big smiles as we surfed the swells witht boat speeds of up to 20 knots. On Spitfire we had a port rudder malfunction, once we had retrieved it onto the boat we carried on (good thing catamarans have two of just about everything) but the race had well and truly slipped out of reach. Jason and Bruce on Relentless showed excellent speed to claim the trophy in a winning elapsed time of 3 hours 49mins.

In eight days time we will be running the Matakana Raid in which we will be again circumnavigating Matakana Island, but with a few pit stops along the way.
