PAC RIM Regatta is high on the Club agenda at present. For those that are not familiar with it, is a regatta held every two years between a group of countries, namely NZ, Australia, Japan, Russia, Canada and the USA. TYPBC is the NZ club and each Club produces a team to compete against each other. Each Club takes turns in hosting the regatta, and this time it is our turn. We anticipate about 100 international guests who will be home hosted during the regatta.

The Opening ceremony and welcome for the 100 or so visitors will be held on Friday 9 March and the regatta will be opened formally by the Mayor including a formal welcome by local iwi. Then there will be a spit roast BBQ which tickets can be purchased by club members ($45 per head). There is a practice race on Saturday and racing begins in earnest on Sunday. Final Race is on Friday 16 March and a closing ceremony that evening. During the week there will be various excursions for our guests which have been organised by the Pac Rim Committee.

Organising this has been a lot of hard work and hats off to the hard work of a very effective group of members. Thanks to you all.

But they need additional help too so please see if you can help. There are details below and you should have received an email from the office telling you more.

Keelers had a very slow start to the Mike Garner Memorial race on Sunday – Manxman took the win in the end. Much better breeze for the Wednesday night Summer Series this week and some fine sailing enjoyed by all.

Good luck to our Zephyr sailors taking part in the nationals at Worser Bay this weekend, and  this weekend sees a Friday night fun race and Centreboard sailing on Sunday.

Don’t forget to put your point of view regarding the Uni Campus – council are taking note of these responses. You can do it right now online, it only takes 2 minutes, just click on this link here

Alternatively you can head down to the Strand (10am to 1pm) or the Edgewater Fan (3-5pm) on Friday and talk to Councillors and Council staff directly. There will be club members there to talk to Councillors too to ensure we get our point of view over, representatives from the Marina Society and Game Fishing Club will be there too.

Have a good weekend

NEWS

Keeler news

Last night Summer Series Race 5 was held in a gusty westerly of 15 to 20 knots in low tide conditions up to Stowe and back. With the westerly wind pretty much directly in line with 17 the start line had the interesting conundrum of whether to do a spinnaker start on starboard and gybe or on port to avoid a gybe but give way to starboard boats. Those that started on starboard generally had the upper hand being on the inside as they approached 17.  At the time of writing the race results were up in the air a bit for Division 1 due to protests and lessor so for Division 3 due to time recording issues. Congrats to Kaimai Express, Red Line and No Regrets for taking line honours in their respective divisions and also to Red Line and No Regrets for taking first place on handicap in Divisions 2 and 3. Division 1 handicap results are still to come.

Due to lack of interest (or crew enthusiasm) the Gold Cup will not be sailed as part of the Bluewater Series on Saturday the 3rd of March. Instead a shorter course will be sailed on Sunday the 4th of March for those boats wanting to get out and race still – details of the course are still to come but block out your diaries.

I have had no response to my request for an Auckland to Tauranga race organiser champion – I am still hopeful that someone will step forward and drive this race forward! Otherwise the future of the race looks uncertain.

I am constantly hearing the boats are struggling for crew on the weekend races. We have a Crew Available / Crew Wanted page on the website and this is being promoted through Facebook more – thanks to Reina Del la Varis for all her hard work with this. However it may well be that we have to accept this continuing trend and schedule more short-handed races in next year’s calendar – something for us all to think about and discuss at the forthcoming AGM.

See you out there – maybe from a Zephyr next time??
