Commodore's Comments

Fantastic news this week that we have a new national champion in the Club following the performance of Elly Warren at the Laser Nationals in Lyttelton last weekend. Elly overcame a poor start to the regatta, and fought her way back to win the Laser Radial Youth Girl title. Well done Elly!

Over in Brisbane our boardsailors have been performing. Congratulations Max van der Zalm, on winning his 2nd Gold medal of 2018 in the Australian Formula Nationals (free Formula Class). An impressive result, as it immediately followed on from his win at the Oceania Techno 293 plus, the previous week..

Congratulations too to Veerle ten Have, finishing first Girl U19 (3rd overall) in the mixed girls/boys Techno Plus Oceanic Championships. She has earned NZL the qualification for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Argentina

At Worser Bay we had 4 of our Starling sailors competing in the North Island Champs using the opportunity to experience the venue for the nationals in April. Conditions were variable and challenging but all our sailors ended up in the top 20 of the 47 strong fleet. Well done to top finisher Joel Kennedy (7th), Sydney Cunliffe (11), Josh Blackie (18) and Blair Mellsop (19).

Good luck to all those sailors off to the Auckland Champs and the Auckland Anniversary Regattas this weekend.

At the Club, last night was Summer Series night, and a great breeze and balmy temps meant that for many keeler crews the idea of falling overboard and having a swim seemed quite appealing. Divisions 1-3 headed out to A Beacon and then some had a very difficult sail back through the entrance as the sea breeze quickly became a land breeze.

This weekend sees the Tauranga – Whitianga Race with a compulsory briefing for skippers at 7am on Saturday at the Club. Auckland – Tauranga race is the following weekend therefore next Wednesdays racing will follow the normal Wednesday night format but the points will not contribute to the series.

Tornado Nationals (Feb 3-5th) are also happening on the same weekend as the Auckland Tauranga race – so there will be plenty going on at the Club.

The first Friday Night Fun Race of 2018 is tomorrow night starting at 1800hrs – all skippers need to complete the Safety Declaration if they haven’t already.

Centreboard sailing as normal this Sunday but note there is no centreboard racing on Sunday 3rd Feb.

Good sailing everyone, and stay cool and hydrated out there!

NEWS

coaches corner with kirsten

Hi all! We have had a very successful holiday program so far, with gorgeous hot weather, sea breezes, and a whopping 29 sailors attending. We have had 10 Level 1s this week who are all doing very well and yesterday were able to beat the tide and make it to the sand bar. Our Level 2s and 3s are also doing very well and several are looking at moving up into Green Fleet in the coming term.

Remember Term 1 starts this coming Saturday, January 27th. On Saturday we will have our Level 1 in the am and pm, as well as Adult Learn to Sail. Then Sunday we start off in the am with our Level 2/3 class. You can find all the information for our kids’ Term 1 courses on our website here: http://www.yacht.org.nz/kids_LTS

If you have any questions don’t hesitate to contact Kirsten at LTS.coach@yacht.org.nz or call on 021 216 7522.

Cheers,

Kirsten

13th Pacific Rim Challenge March 9th to 16th 2018

Hosted by Tauranga New Zealand 2018

Planning is well advanced for the hosting of this exciting regatta.

Participating countries are:

  •     Bellingham - USA
  •     Victoria BC - Canada
  •     Port Stephens - Australia
  •     Tatayama - Japan
  •     Nakhodka - Russia
  • TYPBC - New Zealand

TYPBC has a proud history competing in the Pacific Rim Challenge stemming back to 1992.
Ross Currie captained a team of five TYPBC sailors who travelled to Port Stephens (Just north of Newcastle) in Australia, to compete in Tauranga’s first PacRim. The team consisted of:
Ross Currie, Bruce Goodchap, Fred Jeanes, Stewart Edgar and Neville Kennedy. What a team!!!
What an experience, what great hosts the Port Stephens Yacht Club were. The racing in Adams 30 yachts proved very close for all teams. At the end of the series raced over six days, Aussy and NZ were in equal 1st place. On count back Australia edged New Zealand into second place, with Canada 3rd.
The cultural experience for overseas teams has an important role.
Visiting team members will be introduced to the uniqueness of how life is lived, played and enjoyed in Tauranga. The memories the visitors will have will be etched in their minds for years to come, as it has been for those TYPBC members who experienced first-hand when participating in the many PacRim Challenges since 1992.
In a regatta of this size with 100 overseas participants, volunteers will be needed and welcomed for the week: 9th March to 16th March

This is a showcase for Tauranga and TYPBC and those who volunteer will meet and enjoy the many international participants.

Give this event some thought, then act by phoning or emailing Lynne at TYPBC office – office@yacht.org.nz  or ph 07 5785512
