Commodore's Comments

Finally we can announce that Peter Burling and the Americas Cup are coming to Town. Make a date in your diary for Sunday August 27th.
At the time of writing we have not been told exactly what Council have planned however it looks likely that there will be some sort of civic reception which is open to the public during the middle of the day and then we will hold a function at the Club for members late afternoon before the Cup has to head back to Auckland later that evening.
The function at the Club will be a ticket only event, which will be for members and invited guests only and that way we can control numbers. Details of how to get tickets will be published in next week’s newsletter, on the website and on the Club Facebook Page.

On the International stage Jason Saunders is back on the Nacra 17 with Gemma Jones sailing at the Hempel Sailing World Championships in Aarhus, Denmark. Aarhus is the second largest city in Denmark situated about 190km north west of Copenhagen, on the east coast. Also sailing in this regatta is Thomas Saunders and Sam Meech in the Lasers. After Day 1 Gemma and Jason were in 2nd, Thomas in 3rd and Sam had a bad day including a Black Flag, down in 43rd. Good luck to them.

It was another quiet Sunday for the Centreboard division on Sunday. The wind picked up for one race before dying out completely in the second race and only filling in again once everyone had come ashore and packed up again. Frustrating times.

This Sunday the Keelers and Multihulls are hoping for better things with their penultimate race of the Burnsco Winter Series 2017.

Good sailing

Last Race of the Burnsco Winter Series

The last race of the Winter Series is on Sunday the 27th of August. An Americas Cup event is planned for afternoon of the same day.
As it is likely that many skippers and crew would like to take part in the Americas Cup event the Keeler Committee is proposing to shift the final race to Saturday the 26th of August (usual start times).
If any skippers feel that shifting the final race to Saturday will unfairly affect their Winter Series result please call James Stewart on 021 0202 9333 to discuss.
We are not wanting to disadvantage yachts competing in the Winter Series in any way but do want to encourage maximum participation by club members in the forthcoming Americas Cup celebrations which will be on the afternoon of that Sunday.

Centreboard Division Update

Nespresso Youth Training Week. Great news that the club has enough sailors for at least two crews. This is a regatta for junior members in Elliott 7m yachts raced at Kawau Island c/- RNZYS.

420 radio usage, the club is spending a small fortune on VHF radios and they’ve become a consumable item. We also can’t have defective radios on race days. As a result we can no longer afford to lend radio’s to 420 teams training from the club on outside of organised events. Related to this members are reminded that for self-directed training that it is the responsibility of parents when juniors are out on the harbour; outside of organised events.

Class Reps: The Centreboard division has active class representatives for all the following: Green Optimist, Open Optimist, P Class, Starling, Laser, 3.7 Class, Windsurfing, don’t hesitate to email  secretary.cdiv@gmail.com if you want to get in contact.

Optimist Green Fleet: Welcome to all our new green fleet parents, you are encouraged to go out on the water to see racing up close, especially from the start boat and in rescue boats, please don’t hesitate to introduce yourself and bring your lunch. Time is running out, the last day of the winter series is August 20. Note prize-giving is to follow on the day.

3.7 Demo boat: This is being used by juniors and  anyone is welcome to use it; including senior sailors 60kg up to 90kg. It can be booked and used by anyone interested and help is available to rig up and a degree of free coaching contact: Chris secretary@3-7Class.org.nz

Rescue Boats:  A reminder that the minimum crew is two on all typbc power boats. Also that there is a minimum of one supervising adult when coaches <18 are operating.

Boat Storage Shed: There has been repeated blocking of fire exit lane in storage shed, it is important to understand where the fire exit lane is and then to keep this clear. Note that boat storage renews end of August.

AIMS Regatta: Sept 10-13 with 99 sailors this event has been a huge success year on year. If you can help with shore / rescue / mark boats please contact Leanne or via secretary.cdiv@gmail.com

Managers Comments

The year is quickly slipping by, clearly indicated in our world by the 2017 Winter Series drawing to a close, the 2016/17 Calendar of Events showing the last few events, and pressure on Divisions to get the new calendar from draft to final version. Thanks to Gun and all others who put so much time into getting this calendar organised and ready for printing.

A new season dawning means you will soon be receiving your subscription renewal notice. As has been the recent custom the notice will include a prompt payment discount with the option to donate the discount back to the club as a donation (tax deductible), which of course is a great benefit to the club. This year included in the subscription notice will be a small survey which we would really love you all to respond to.

We have had a big week in the Functions area with a Marine Science Conference over Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Delegates and speakers have come from all around the world.  Feedback has been great even though the weather hasn’t. Maryanne and I have enjoyed being part of the function team as Jo’s slaves helping with dishes and getting food out.

It is also worth reminding you all that the club is open on Friday evenings for members. This is your club and we would like to see you all pop in for a drink and or a meal. Bring the family, start the weekend by sharing in the conversations and conviviality that are such a part of this club.

Brain Teaser:

I have four identical brothers.
I don't get out as much as them.
While the four of them go around,
I sleep quietly, in the dark.
I am often forgotten about,
But in times of trouble
I will be woken and called upon
And I will save the day.
What am I?
