Commodore's Comments

The Keelers had a good trip to Mayor Island on Saturday. Thirteen boats started from A Beacon then anchored for lunch before turning around and racing back again. Frenzy led the way there finishing 8 minutes ahead on Manxman but it was not enough with Manxman taking the win on handicap. The race back was a spinnaker reach which suited Truxton perfectly, who recorded speeds of over 20 knots at times (check out the video on the Facebook page). They won the return race on both line and handicap. There were some spectacular broaches as the fleet closed in on A Beacon some damaged spinnakers. The winds were too big for any centreboard sailing so that was cancelled.

Wednesday night saw the beginning of the Summer Series for Keelers, Trailer Yachts and Multihulls. Twenty nine keelers and trailer yachts plus 4 multihulls started. Keelers had a windward start into a 5-10 knot easterly with the luxury of a full tide. The courses took the fleets to Pilot Bay and then up the harbour before returning via the Otumoetai Channel. Congratulations to winners of Divisions 1-4 namely Whatever, Fast Lane, Candidus, and Keewee and in the Multihulls Spitfire. Note that Division 1 has now been split into 2 smaller divisions. Also welcome and thanks to our new race officer in the Tower, Darryl McManus.

This weekend sees the beginning of the Short Handed Series for the keelboats starting at 10.00am on Saturday. The series is slightly different from the Two-Handed Series of last season, with boats being allowed to carry a total of three crew. No racing for the centreboarders at Tauranga this weekend, but good luck to those heading to Murrays Bay for the Winter Champs

Special thanks to all those people who gave their time to the City to Surf fun run which started from the TYPBC on Sunday morning. There was a good team of people to pack the goody bags on Saturday afternoon, and then well done to the people who braved the rain to help run the race including taking registrations and being marshals during the course of the race.
If you get the chance about 11.15am on Tuesday, look out for the Aotea Maersk when she visits Tauranga for the first time. When she was built about 16 years ago she was one of the largest container vessels in the world. Not so anymore but at 347m long and a gross tonnage of 92,000 tonnes she will still be a new challenge for the local pilots. She has a draught of 10.4m and is a typical reason for the dredging that has been taking place. She is going to be a regular visitor to Tauranga.

Good sailing this weekend.

 Centre board Division News

Firstly I would like to thank everyone for the fine work done with the city to surf fun run on Sunday. All went well without a hitch except for the weather which the competitors didn't seem to mind. It was a great day thank you all so much.

We had to cancel last Sundays club racing due to high winds and the week before on opening day we only got one race in which wasn't great but numbers have been good and I do expect them to grow as summer and beautiful consistant weather nears... Bring it on!

This weekend we have the junior winter stacks at murrays bay, we have around a dozen boats representing us. I would like to wish them all a lucky and enjoyable regatta!

Thanks

situation vacant

We are seeking a casual function assistant.

This is a casual position with hours dependent on functions. Some daytime work is involved with the predominance of work in the evenings and weekends. Over the summer months work increases and therefore the hours increase.

The position will involve function set up, waiting (including dishwashing), bar work and cleaning.

Some heavy lifting is involved and this position would suit a person with their full licence as there are some late nights.

The successful application will need a cheerful, outgoing personality, be hardworking and reliable, be able to relate to clients and other staff and have the ability to work as part of a small team.

Please contact Steve Patton (Functions Manager) with expressions of interest.
