Commodore's Comments

Well the breeze came back with a vengeance for the Keelers Burnsco Winter Series Race on Sunday. As the fleet of 15 boats assembled for the start wind gusts reached about 40 knots in the gusts with some very dark grey clouds and some icy rain. The Multihulls had very sensibly never even pulled a sail out of a sail bag. There were certainly a few small jibs being used on yachts that don’t see the light of day very often. The downwind start saw no-one brave (or silly?) enough to fly a spinnaker although there were a few interesting altercations with some on port and some on starboard and a few interesting broaches. Inevitably there was a bit of carnage with some breakages. Twelve of the original 16 finished the race with Whatever leading the fleet home. On handicap Sabian was first, followed by Arethusa and Otway III.

It’s great to see the Club’s new Facebook page is really starting to gain traction with over 120 people now following it. Now I know not all of you use Facebook but over 1.65 billion people are active users of Facebook and that number is still growing steadily. From the Club’s perspective it is a really useful way of engaging with our members and the wider yachting community. For those who have not been to the new page you need to search on Facebook for Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club – TYPBC and then “Like” the page. We will use it to keep you updated with news of Club members, race results, and news of our Olympic sailors in Rio and any other snippets of interesting sailing stuff that comes to hand.

With the Olympics drawing closer all our sailors have been continuing to practice hard in Rio with the warm-up regattas. We will be watching their progress with eager interest but also appreciating how hard it is for family, friends and supporters watching back home.

This Friday night we are fortunate to be visited by Ralph Roberts who is a life member of Yachting NZ, an Olympic and Paralympic Yachting Judge and Sport New Zealand’s first lifetime achievement awardee. He will be speaking about Sailablity and disabled sailing.  Thanks to Peter Dallimore for making this happen.

With the passing of the mantle of Commodore to myself last week, I think this is a very opportune moment to acknowledge the huge contribution that Nigel has made over the last couple of years. I am not sure if anyone but himself and Kerry fully know or appreciate the hours that he has put in keeping the Club going doing odd jobs, helping with coaching, or whatever. The list is endless and we have been extremely fortunate to have the benefit of his contribution. Many thanks Nigel, you will be a hard act to follow!

Centreboarders will be out this weekend and hopefully conditions will be a bit more friendly than last weekend.

Good sailing

yearly subs

It's almost that time of year again! This year there won't be an increase in subs so you can expect to pay the same as last year, invoices for the 2016/17 season will be sent out shortly and if you pay before the 31st August 2016 you will receive a discount, you will also have the opportunity to donate your discount back to the club's Sailing School Fund - see your invoice for details.

Sail for Life

Thanks to the anonymous yacht club family donor for their $1000 donation following Nicky Wilkins talk at the AGM.  This has prompted a matching donation of $1000 so that’s another $2000 into the Sail for Life endowment fund to support sailing in the Bay for the long term.

If you are in a position to do the same, that’s fantastic and will be greatly appreciated.  Remember you will get one third of what you donate back from IRD.

Were it not for the income from Sail for Life, we could not have contemplated gifting the ten plastic Optimists to TYPBC this winter, which will greatly help the Sailing School.  Last season the income from Sail for Life also helped us:
•    Keep our rental rates low for club, school and private use of our boats
•    Sponsor more than 20 disadvantaged kids from low decile schools through learn to sail courses
•    Provide cash support to two junior and two blind sailors attending world championships

This coming season we expect to do more of the same, as well as helping to kickstart the Sailability Tauranga initiative.  So please support your community and the sport you love – you’ll find it immensely rewarding!

Contact Stuart Pedersen on 574 1169 or Nicky Wilkins at Acorn.
