Commodore's Comments

Last Sunday it was nice to get down to the club to see the start of the Burnsco Winter series on a stunning day after my return from Europe.
It was a matter of trying not to drift over the start line with the outgoing tide, which saw several boats anchoring just before the start. Most of the 20 starters managed to make their way to the entrance through the shipping traffic, where the race came to a glassy holt and eventually the engines were started.

The Asian Optimist Champs finished up in Sri Lanka where Joel Kennedy managed a final result of 38th in a fleet of 112 of the World's top Optimist sailors. Lachlan Dillon who missed half of his racing due to sickness bounced back to win one of the final races in the silver fleet. Well-done guys, the Asians are one of the most competitive international Optimist regattas on the circuit.

Dylan McKinlay is a mad keen and competitive sailor in Centre Boarders and Keelers. He has also been sailing on land! Dylan is a keen Blokart sailor. Recently he finished 3rd in the ‘Performance – Middle’ class at the North Island Open Champs at the Papamoa track. Well done!

Sadly our race coach Maria Ferrario has left for the winter. Maria has done a fantastic job again this year. For her second season with us, she again brought a heap of experience to pass on with a ton of enthusiasm and energy for our sailors and the club. We are very grateful for all her work, wish her all the best and hope to see her again soon.

I would also like to thank Luca Tosic, He has also been coaching during the second half of the season but will be leaving us next week. Luca, a past competitive Laser Radial sailor and has also done great job passing on his knowledge in our courses.

Next Sunday the Centreboarders are back on the Water for the Steve’s Marine Winter series. It is great to see a big fleet of 55 entries to kick off the series.

Aims Games Yachting is fast approaching, Starting on Sunday 4th September 2016.
Please note entries for all codes close on the 15th June. Entries must be processed through your schools and sports coordinators.

Remember to come down on Friday evening! This Friday June 10th at the Club, there will be a talk about “Sailability Tauranga”. This is an initiative by BOPSAT in conjunction with the Club to look at the possibility of launching a programme for disabled sailing in Tauranga. We are fortunate to have a visiting speaker, Don Manning from Sailability Wellington.  Don runs a very active programme at three locations with 17 boats, 50 volunteers and over 130 sailors.  This will happen after dinner at the Club tomorrow night, starting about 7pm
.

Good sailing.

NEWS

Keelers Winter series

Wind was virtually non-existent for the start of the Burnsco Winter Series on Sunday. A few boats were anchored just up tide of the start line in order to avoid an ocs with last of the ebb still having an effect.
From there it was a tortuous drift/sail towards the harbour entrance, made difficult by the strengthening flood tide, and not helped by a container vessel coming into port.
The course was shortened with the A beacon turning mark changed to C buoy.
But it was never going to be enough.
Whatever was first boat through the entrance and got close to the buoy but couldn't make it. It was good to see Will with his new boat Truxton in the fleet.
So while it was frustrating, it was still a lovely day on the harbour, and hopefully the wind will be back in a couple of week's time.

trailer yachts calendar 2016/17

Greetings fellow trailer sailors, with the new season coming up racing will follow as always the standard Wednesday night formula.

Although Brent has got most of the cruising dates sorted, we are still open to suggestion as to any special events that others in our division may like to have included in our calendar.

Please contact Brent, myself or the office if you have any suggestions

Happy Sailinig

Graham Vincent, Div 4 Chairman.

Auckland to tauranga 2017

Potential change of race start discussion paper.
Greetings fellow members, the A2T2016 has been run, this has been a huge learning curve for Lizanne and myself. For many practical points of view, I would like to gauge member’s views on the possibility to a race date change to the weekend of Auckland Anniversary 2017. January 29 to 30 2017.
The benefits are a much warmer sailing environment. Greater day light hours. Being a regional holiday we involve the same sailing competitors as in the past.
There are some pitfalls to such a proposition, namely, the good will and support of the very many volunteers, many of whom have dedicated successive Easters to our traditional race programme. The potential change of race date might well disrupt the holiday plans of volunteers and their family life, if the January date is opted for.
I envisage that by racing at a warm time of the year, that we will encourage more competitors than we have had in the past. In addition, with the vast numbers of holiday makers in the Tauranga environs, make a great weekend with sails on the water and awesome spectator viewing. In addition casual visitors may well increase the revenue from the clubs hospitality services. Awareness locally, might also enthuse potential members for our club.
We value you input. Please drop us a line at: admin@aucklandtoTauranga.org.nz
A decision must be made soon, as Notice of Race must be placed as soon as possible.

a2t2017 poster design competition

Open to all TYPBC club members and interested graphic design artists.

The perennial Auckland to Tauranga Yacht Race poster design is due for an upgrade!

On behalf of the A2T2017 race committee, I am opening a competition for members to design the new 2017 Race poster.
The poster must have 3 elements: A symbol of Auckland, a symbol of Tauranga / Mt Maunganui and one or more racing yachts in it (It might be nice to sneak in a multihull as well as a monohull)
The finished size is to be A3 but also scalable down, in JPG, PNG (other formats might be required)  Please note that the finished submission will be required to be modified with race dates etc.

For inspiration, please look at the website:  http://www.aucklandtotauranga.org.nz
The precise nature of the winner’s prize has yet to be determined, but it will be great!

An electronic submission should be sent to: admin@aucklandtotauranga.org.nz or office@yacht.org.nz                                                                                                                                                And a printed hard copy delivered to Tauranga Yacht Club office, Sulphur Point, Tauranga.
Submissions close at midnight,  Monday July 18, 2016

PS, it will be a committee decision to choose the winning entrant

 Sailability tauranga

A proposal to launch sailing for the disabled information evening Friday 10th of June at 7pm.

Commodore Nigel Rippey and the Bay of Plenty Sailing Academy Trust invite all Club members and interested parties to stick around after dinner on Friday the 10th of June to learn what Sailability does and how it might work in Tauranga. Guest Speaker: Don Manning, Sailability Wellington.

Don runs a very Active programme with three locations, 17 boats, 50 volunteers and over 130 sailors. He was instrumental in getting Sailability going in Rotorua and elsewhere, and is coming up for the weekend especially to spread the word and help us put a plan together.

  • Should the Club get involved?
  • Would you personally like to help?
  • Come and find out!

Come and meet Don and check out his inspirational video! Then on the following Sunday morning at 10am a project team will meet with Don to plan a way forward.

Want to join the team?? Talk to us on Friday night.
