Commodore's Comments

Happy New Year to all our members.

I hope all those who got away cruising had some nice weather and managed to find a nice spot to shelter from all the wind we had from time to time.

Over the break it has been great to see heaps of action at the club with training for regattas and lots just getting out on the water in some of the great conditions we have had. Even Pete Burling and Blair Tuke were spotted ripping around the harbour in the 49er.

We are looking forward to a busy second half of the season with plenty of regattas and good sailing to be had in the next few months. We of course have the big ones to organise, Tauranga Regatta and the Auckland to Tauranga Race at Easter.

The P Class Tanner Cup has just been sailed at the BOI Sailing Club preceding the Tauranga Cup (National Champs), which are on now.
TYPBC has P Class stalwarts Bill Mitchinson and Gary Smith up in the BOI helping with measuring and judging.

Lachlan Dillon was the rep for the BOP after winning the trials. He started the Tanner Cup racing well, sitting 3rd after day one.  With some tough racing against the 11 regional representatives, and unfortunately scoring an OCS, Lachlan finished up 7th after 7 races. We have 5 sailors competing in the 37 strong Tauranga Cup fleet. The first two days has been very tricky light conditions. See report below. Good luck to all and let's hope for some good breeze.

Last weekend the 49er and 49er FX Nationals were held off Akarana over two days, completing 12 races. Richard Burling, the 49er association president, largely organised the regatta. The fleet was small but the racing was good and close. The SW breeze of 15–20knots made for some very fast and exciting sailing. Our top team Pete Burling and Blair Tuke predictably took it out but they did have several races taken off them. TYPBCs Trent Rippey and partner Isaac McHardy managed a 1st and a couple of seconds to finish 3rd behind Logan Dunning Beck and Jack Simpson. In the FX class, Molly Meech and Alex Maloney were 1st. The 49er team is off to Miami next week for a World Cup Regatta followed by the 2016 World Champs in Clearwater.

See you at the club.
