Commodore's Comments

The Finn Gold Cup wrapped up last weekend after a great week of sailing off Takapuna. Andrew Murdoch gave us plenty of reason to follow the results after starting off the regatta in the top two after day two. The conditions were difficult at times so most sailors gathered a few extra points as the week went on. Andrew finished off the regatta the way he started with some excellent races and finished equal on points with Vasilij Zbogar of Slovenia. In the medal race the Slovenian finished better than Andrew in 9th so took the bronze medal leaving Andrew in fourth. Really disappointing for Andrew to just miss the bronze but never the less a stunning result in this Finn class. Andrew only started his campaign in the Finn in 2013 after representing NZL twice at the Olympics in the Laser.

Last weekend Napier hosted the North Island Laser Champs. We had several sailors’ head down. Saturday was looking good but the breeze quickly turned as the fleet was getting in to the first race. A squall of 35–40 knots decimated the fleet and cause some damage to boats and masts. The Tauranga crew of Peter Warren and Andrew Wright on Bill Mitchinson were kept busy with rescues!  Sailing resumed on Sunday with 4 races to complete the regatta. Dylan McKinlay had good consistent results to finish an awesome 4th overall in a fleet of 36 Radials. Also Jason Hewitt finished in 15th, Jonathan Barnett 19th, Elly Warren 26th and Richard Wright 29th.  Well done.

This weekend we have a really big team of centreboard sailors heading up to the Sir Peter Blake Regatta at Torbay. Maria, Alice and Emma will all be going to support the TYPBC sailors. Good luck to all.

On the 7th December we have our Youth Team heading off to the Nespresso Youth Training week at Kawau Island in the Elliott’s. Good luck to Elly Warren, Jonathan Barnett, Tom Maidment, Jack Revington and Richard Wright. Niamh Dillon is also hopeful of getting into another team for the week. This will again be a great experience for our youth sailors who mix their sailing in centreboarder and keel boats in our club.

A reminder to you all to keep the evening of 17th December free for the Commodores Christmas Party at the club. Come along and a have Christmas get together with all the divisions of our club. Be sure to bring along some friends and all those past members who are welcome to come down to our great club.

Also the Christmas on the Beach day at Matakana on Sunday 13th December will be great day to have some fun on the beach before we head into the Christmas break. Again we hope to see all divisions of the club coming together for this. Cross fingers for good weather! Any enquires please contact Peter Blackie or the office.

LASER NI CHAMPS

Elly, Dylan, Richie, Jon and Jason attended the Laser NI's all racing in the radial fleet at Napier over the weekend. No hesitations were had despite mention from the locals saying they don't go out in a westerly wind as it always ends up in trouble for us we headed out anyway.
