Commodore's Comments

The first NZCT AIMs Games Anchor Yachting Championship finished with prize giving on Tuesday evening after an awesome 3 days of racing. The first regatta for yachting at AIMs has proven to be very popular and a great success for 63, year 7 and 8 competitors. The weather of course plays a huge part in the enjoyment of the regatta, which thankfully was near perfect.
Sunday was a testing day for Race Officer Bill Whitiskie and for many sailors with the breeze up around 25 knots at times, seeing only 23 finishers in the only race sailed that day.

Monday and Tuesday were perfect with the incoming tide and 10 to 15 knots making for some great racing for the competitors and spectators. Campbell Stanton from Rosmini Intermediate sailed incredibly well to win all but one race in the individual Championship. Second place was schoolmate, Francesco Kayrouz, both recently returned from international Optimist regattas. Third place was our own very consistent sailor James Barnett.
Lachlan Dillon from the TYPBC also had some good races to finish 11th overall.

In the Schools Teams Championship, which counts the best two sailors from each school, Rosmini Intermediate easily won the Gold. Silver went to Otumoetai Intermediate with James Barnett and Joel Kennedy. The Bronze went to Murrays Bay Intermediate. See below for link to full story and results.

Monday morning saw an early start for our staff and volunteers getting prepared for serving breakfast to 260. It was a great morning with the TV1 breakfast show live from the club. The kids and parents were very excited to see and talk to all the celebrities including Blair Tuke.

AIMs Games Chairman Brian Driver and Tournament Director Vicki Semple visited the regatta several times and spoke at the prize giving. Both are extremely happy with the regatta we held, are very impressed with our club and its facilities and are looking forward to the yachting next year. I want to say a huge thanks to all our awesome volunteers who did a great job on and off the water. Our club is incredibly lucky to have such experienced and helpful members who enjoy putting in the time for the club and youth sailors.

Our 470 sailors Sam Barnett and Zak Merton fly out to Qingdao tomorrow via Shanghai for ISAF Sailing World Cup Qingdao, the last 2014-15 World Cup. This regatta is the Olympic qualifier for Asia in the 470 and a 200-point regatta. The regatta is from the 14-20 September and can be followed on the ISAF Sailing World Cup website. Sam said “Zak and I have been training hard since the Europeans in June/July and have practiced what we learnt in Denmark. We are hoping to assess where we are at and put into practice our improvements. There are 32 470s entered including some of the best in the world. I am sure we will learn heaps”.  Today Sam and Zak thanked the TYPBC for the continued support! Good luck to Sam and Zak!

Opening day is fast looming on the 20th September. Better get the winter maintenance done!!

NZCT AIMS GAMES ANCHOR YACHTING

After 8 races and one discard the Aims Games Anchor Yachting event finished on Tuesday for the 63 Year 7 and 8 sailors. TYPBC sailors James Barnett and Joel Kennedy did incredibly well to finish 2nd overall school for Otumoetai Intermediate and individually placed 3rd and 8th overall with other TYPBC sailors Lachlan Dillon finishing 11th, Tane Herbert 23rd, Max Scott 36th, Cory McConnell 37th, Zackary McKay 50th, Anya Pierce 55th, Josheph Spiers 56th and Monty Carter 60th.

Situation Vacant

We are seeking a casual Function Assistant.

This is a casual position with hours dependent on functions. Some daytime work is involved with the predominance of work in the evenings and weekends. Over the summer months work increases and therefore the hours increase. The position will involve function set up, waiting including dishwashing, bar work and cleaning. Some heavy lifting is involved and would suit a person with their full licence as there are some late nights. The successful application will need a cheerful personality, be able to relate to clients and other staff and have the ability to work as part of a small team.
