Commodore's Comments

This week has been all about organising for the AIMs Games Yachting. This Saturday 65 Optimist sailors will be coming to the TYPBC from around the country to compete in AIMs Yachting for the first time in the history of the massive intermediate schools competition.

There will be an incredible 8000 competitors and 1500 coaches from 261 schools from Kaitaia to Dunedin in Tauranga for the week-long championship. Sailors will be representing 30 schools and 10 of the sailors are from Tauranga. They will be competing for the overall individual championship honours and for year 7 and 8, male and female. Also there is school team championship honours. Saturday is registration and safety checks, Sunday racing starts at 1200hrs, Monday and Tuesday racing starts at 1100hrs. Prize giving will follow soon after racing on Tuesday. On Monday morning TV1 will be hosting the breakfast show from the TYPBC. There is a big breakfast for around 250 sailors, sponsors, organisers and celebrities including Rawdon Christie & Sam Wallace (TVNZ Breakfast), Will Johnston (The Hits), Peter Miskimmin (Sport NZ), Gemma Flynn, Blair Tuke, Beau Monga, Jamie McDell, NZ Woman’s Sevens players & more who are involved in the event. The big marquee is up at the club and sponsors branding is going up in the next few days. All we need now is good sailing weather. Please come down and check out the action.

Recently an unfortunate incident in exceptionally bad weather left one of the catamarans with damage when it blew over on the front lawn of the club. This is a good reminder for those storing boats outside to regularly check them and ensure they are secure in all weather. It is a good reminder also that the club does not insure private boats stored in the sheds or outside. Boats are stored at the owners' risk. To reduce your risk we recommend that you have insurance.

Good sailing.
