Commodore's Comments

The Winter Series for the centreboarders wrapped up last Sunday on a nice day with light and shifty breezes followed with prize giving. There was a good turnout of about 40 sailors in 10 different classes. Congratulations to all who competed and the winners of each class. The winners were, Opti Green Tomas Sanchez, Opti Open Blair Mellsop, P Class Joel Kennedy, Starling Annie Oxborrow, Laser Radial Dylan McKinlay, Laser Full Barry Cutfeild, Zephyr Andy Knowles,Open Chris Mitchell, RSX Alex van der Zalm and Techno Max van der Zalm. Thanks to race officer Warren Belk for running another great series.

This weekend the boardsailors, RSX and Technos are having a training clinic focused on the Techno sailors preparing for the Worlds. Top NZL board sailor Natalia Kosinska is coming for the weekend to work with the sailors. Saturday evening they are having a dinner and videos, all welcome. It is great to see some boardsailing action at the club!

Max van der Zalm (15) and Veerle ten Have (14) are both training hard to go to the Techno Worlds in Cagliari, Italy in October. Both have had a good season, Max was 1st overall U17 Boys Kendall Cup 2015 and 1st North Island Champ Boys U17. He went to the Noumean nationals last year and finished 3rd overall. Veerle, 1st U17 Girls Nat Champ 2015, 1st North Island Champ Girls U17 and 1st U17 Girls Kendall Cup 2015.

Speaking of competing overseas, Geoff Collins and Mark Thomas have just returned from Airlie Beach Race Week in Australia. They sailed on a 39ft Dehler, Dehler Magic. Geoff and Mark doing sail trimming and tactics finished 3rd overall in Div 2 with their Aussie crew. See link to full story below.

It is awesome to see our kiwi sailors doing well in the Rio Olympic test event. By all accounts the weather has been light and shifty living up the venues expectations. Pete Burling and Blair Tuke, 49er are again out in front setting the standard for Jason Saunders and Gemma Jones, Nacra 17 and Molly Meech and Alex Maloney, 49FX who are both in the top 5 at the moment. Reportedly several sailors have been sick due to the polluted waters. YNZ briefings have very good coverage of the event and results. If you want to receive updates go onto the YNZ web site and subscribe to their newsletter.

On a more sombre note I see George Gair and Jim Davies (Skin) both passed away this week. George Gair who was a member of parliament for years and actually opened the TYPBC as a new club on Sulphur Point in 1983. Jim Davies was an active, live wire and centreboard sailor in the late 1949/50s era and is well known in Tauranga to this day as a jazz trumpeter.

This Sunday is the final race in the Burnsco Winter Series for the Keelboats.

Good sailing.

MID WINTER TECHNO CLINIC

WEBSITE CHANGES - your input required

The flag officers, in association with Jason Marra of Fuel Agency, are undergoing a review of the club's website and looking to see how it could be improved. We would like members to contribute to this review. We want to know what you like or dislike about the site and what needs changing. Also any thoughts or ideas about functions and features that could be incorporated into the website. One area we will be looking at will be the ability to pay subs, invoices or entry fees online. Also any logos of associations or affiliations that we need to include. Social media is an ever evolving beast and we need to know what social media channels members feel are important and how we employ them into the functionality of the club. Your thoughts are important to us. Please direct any feedback to Gary Smith smithystga@xtra.co.nz or Jason Marra jason@fuel.agency.
