Commodore's Comments

The weather hasn’t been perfect for the centreboard Burnsco Winter Series. Last Sunday was a great day but not enough breeze to get racing away. The call was made to cancel racing which of course prompted the breeze to kick in soon after. Several boats went out for some sailing and the Zephyrs had some nice informal racing. Next race day on the 16th of August is the final day followed by a prize giving.

On Saturday we had a good turn out of 19 boats for the coaching/training session. It has been great to see some of these very keen young sailors turning up every second week rain hail or shine. Thanks to the youth coaches who have made this possible by giving us their time.

This year we have had a very good response to our advertisement for coaches for the coming season. The applicants have all had good experience and it has made the job of selection a little harder for John Revington and myself. I am glad to say we have 3 coaches confirmed who will be arriving in September and one a little later in November. Maria Ferrario from Argentina is coming back to continue on her great work as race coach. We also have Alice Armstrong who is from Ireland, she will be taking charge of the learn to sail programme, a job which she is doing currently at Ballyholme Yacht Club in Ireland. Alice has worked in Tauranga previously and has many friends here so she knows the area well. Our third coach is Emma Geary who is also Irish. She has been studying finance and working as a race coach in Newport Rhode Island. Emma has some glowing references and she will a great addition to the race-training programme. So we are looking to another great season of coaching for our youth and adults and hopefully building numbers sailing in our club again this season.

The Nespresso National Youth Training Week is to be held again this year from the 7th to the 13th of December, at Kawau. The week of intensive training in Elliot 7s is open to youth between the ages of 15 to 20 years old. TYPBC again would like to have a team go. If you are interested please send your CV to me as soon as possible to rippey@xtra.co.nz

This Sunday is the keelboat Burnsco Winter Series. Peter Dallimore is hoping for some breeze to fill his new PIC Insurance Brokers/North Sails spinnaker that he won at the Auckland Tauranga Race. Peter flew it for the first time last race in light conditions.  It looks great!

Good sailing.

PACRIM 2016

In 2016 Nakhodka will host the international sailing regatta “Pacific Rim Challenge”. About 100 participants are expected to take part from Russia, USA, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Japan. In two years' time, 2018, it will be the turn of TYPBC to host this regatta.

PacRim 2016 will be held from 30 July to 8 August. Yachts will be provided by the hosts, crews will have to exchange the boats with their rivals. In that way, it is considered that all the participants will have the same chances to win. Conrad-25R class yachts are expected to be used.
