Vice Commodore's Comments

Nigel is away this week, enjoying a few days relaxation in warmer climates, so I am filling in.

I think we all took great pleasure in seeing Peter Burling at the helm of the Emirates Team New Zealand AC45 in Portsmouth last weekend. Speaking with Richard Burling, he said they will be very happy coming out of the regatta with a 2nd place. They were a little aggrieved that Oracle was not penalised for a fairly clear port/starboard incident at the windward mark where both boats were approaching at about 20+ knots, on opposite tacks – a penalty to Oracle at that stage would have probably improved their regatta result further. Apparently words were exchanged with a certain Mr Spithill, with the outcome being that they agreed to differ! Peter now heads off to Rio on 49er duty to take part in the Pre-Olympic Regatta.

Last Sunday, the Burnsco Winter Series for the Keelers saw 13 boats on the start line. They started in a very light south-easterly, which backed to a northerly. With an incoming tide Race Officer Bruce sent the fleet down tide via the Otumoetai Channel to 12 W and back. Reloaded hoisted their new kite but missed the instruction about attaching the head of the sail to the halyard and instead pulled it up by the tack! It was so light that the entire fleet heard the skippers’ comments to the foredeck! General Jackson looked great with their new PIC Insurance spinnaker (a prize from the Auckland-Tauranga Race).  Frenzy starting at the back slipped through the fleet after stopping for a rest on a sandbank and Time Warp also confirmed on the return leg, that yes, there definitely is a sand bank at that location.  Rocky also showed a clean pair of heels chasing Voodoo Lounge. The forecasted northerly kicked in just as the fleet was finishing, however Rocky was too quick in the light airs winning ahead of Voodoo Lounge and Candela.

The Pacific Rim takes place again next year in July/August in Russia. This is an opportunity for a group of members to get together to represent the Club in this competitive yet very social regatta. Any members who are interested in knowing more and would like to register their interest should contact Delwyn Keyworth delwyn26@gmail.com.

We are currently in the final stages of putting together the calendar for the new season. This is funded by advertisements on the calendar. If you would like to advertise your business on the calendar please contact the Office and Christine will forward your details to Sun Media who will get in touch with you direct.

The Flag Officers, in association with Jason Marra of Fuel Agency, are undergoing a review of the Club’s website and looking to see how it could be improved. We would like members to contribute to this review. We want to know what you like or dislike about the site and what needs changing. Also any thoughts or ideas about functions and features that could be incorporated into the website. One area we will be looking at will be the ability to pay Subs, invoices or entry fees online. Also any logos of associations or affiliations that we need to include. Social media is an ever evolving beast and we need to know what social media channels members feel are important and how we employ them into the functionality of the Club. Your thoughts are important to us. Please direct any feedback to Gary Smith smithystga@xtra.co.nz or Jason Marra jason@fuel.agency by Friday August 14th.

You should have received your invoice for the renewal of Subs by now, either by mail or email. These need to be paid by the end of August to qualify for the early bird discount which is detailed on the bottom of the invoice.

Centreboarders will be racing again this Sunday. They have two Sundays left in the Winter Series and there will be a Prize giving after racing on the final day of the series on Sunday August 16th. Hopefully they will have a little more wind this Sunday than the Keelers did last week!

SNIPER AND TIME WARP RACING LAST SUNDAY

BOPSAT BOAT PARK RESURFACING

Club members please note – we have arranged for the BoPSAT boat parking area (between the centreboard shed and the rubbish skip) to be tar-sealed right to the port fence (previously just gravel, dirt and weeds).  This should be completed this weekend. The 420s are currently parked elsewhere. All members are invited to drive and park on that area over the next week in order to bed the chips into the tar. This will be easier on the sailors' feet and will also allow us to paint parking bays before putting the boats back there. Thanks!

PACRIM 2016

In 2016 Nakhodka will host the international sailing regatta “Pacific Rim Challenge”. About 100 participants are expected to take part from Russia, USA, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Japan. In two years' time, 2018, it will be the turn of TYPBC to host this regatta.

PacRim 2016 will be held from 30 July to 8 August. Yachts will be provided by the hosts, crews will have to exchange the boats with their rivals. In that way, it is considered that all the participants will have the same chances to win. Conrad-25R class yachts are expected to be used.

If you are interested in taking part please contact Delwyn at delwyn26@gmail.com.
