Commodore's Comments

Last weekend the centreboard fleet had another rough patch of weather.
The training on Saturday unfortunately was cancelled due to heavy rain and some big squalls. Several boats recorded 54 knots in the marina just before midday, which saw one of the cats at the club breaking loose and flipping causing some damage.

Sunday the weather looked ok for the Burnsco Winter Series, so Warren got racing underway but soon after the breeze rally kicked in to see the green fleet being sent ashore again. The second race got underway with a depleted fleet but soon it built to 30 plus knots with a strong outgoing tide and it was cold! Again a good experience for the sailors and rescue boat crews but it will be nice to have some nice weather to remind us why we sail! It will come sooner or later.

Jimmy Gilpin, the boat, not the person has undergone a refit and total repaint inside the hull and over the transom. The Jimmy is over 10 years old but is a great asset as rescue boat for the club. We have recently replaced the motor with a new Yamaha 70hp and replaced the trailer. The Tauranga Maine Industry Association (TMIA) generously offered to do the repainting work for our club. Tauranga Sandblasting garnet blasted all the corrosion and old paint off, then Aaron Layne and his boys at Marine Reflections Ltd made a great job of etch priming, undercoating and finish coating the hull in gloss white.  Matamata Motor Trimmers has made some new drain flaps and replaced the seat. We have almost finished putting it back together, replacing wiring, fuel filters, bilge pump, aerials etc.

We thank the TMIA and all those who have done a great job on the refit. It is looking really good and looking forward to the next 10 years of use at the club and regattas around the country. Go to www.tmia.co.nz to see more information about the association and all the local businesses that are members.

The new season calendar is almost finalised by the divisions in the club. Thanks to Nick Wrinch for all his work to bring this all together again this year. Each year the businesses that advertise on the calendar give us great support, which we are thankful for. If you would like a spot for business advertisement please contact our office or the Sun Live team on 07 578 0030.

Good sailing

PACRIM 2016

In 2016 Nakhodka will host the international sailing regatta “Pacific Rim Challenge”. About 100 participants are expected to take part from Russia, USA, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Japan. In two years' time, 2018, it will be the turn of TYPBC to host this regatta.

PacRim 2016 will be held from 30 July to 8 August. Yachts will be provided by the hosts, crews will have to exchange the boats with their rivals. In that way, it is considered that all the participants will have the same chances to win. Conrad-25R class yachts are expected to be used.

If you are interested in taking part please contact Delwyn at delwyn26@gmail.com.
