Commodore's Comments

The international regatta circuit is in full swing with several top grade regattas on at any one time. Several TYPBC sailors are again doing exceptionally well.

The Laser Worlds have just wound up in Kingston, Canada. Sam Meech had an awesome last day to finish 7th overall just one place behind team mate Andy Maloney. Thomas Saunders finished 27th overall in what must be one of the toughest fleets of 158 Lasers.

The Nacra 17 Worlds has also started in Aarhus, Denmark. Jason Saunders and Gemma Jones have started well to be lying 5th while relative new comers to the class; Olivia MacKay and Micah Wilkinson are 36th and 3rd in Silver. Many will remember Micah learned to race P Class between here and Hamilton and is now part of the AON Fast Track Programme.

Also in Porto, Portugal the 49er Europeans has started and Peter Burling and Blair Tuke are up to 6th after a tidy day two. The pair still has a lot of tough racing ahead.

Last weekend the centreboard fleet was up against it with a forecast for some strong gusts later in the afternoon. Warren managed to get racing but in the end it was too tough for most of our newer sailors. Good experience though, both for the kids and the crews in the rescue boats.

This weekend is looking like some nice weather for the keelboat Burnsco Winter Series 5, so I think we will see a good fleet out.

Good sailing

RULES EXERCISE

Click on the link here, watch the video and try working out. This video was shot by Sailing World at the 2015 NOOD Regatta and shows an incident at a windward mark involving two Beneteau First 40.7s. One boat is yelling, “No Room! Don’t go in there!” and the other boat is yelling, “Don’t Tack!” Watch the video, stop it, move the slider bar to advance and back up the action before coming to a conclusion of who is right and who is wrong. The answer, written by Butch Ulmer, UK Sailmakers’ rules guru, appears here.
