2005 Nuplex P Class National Champs - Tauranga Cup  January 2005

The 2005 Nuplex Tauranga Cup P Class National Champs was sailed in a variety of conditions over four days.  Ranging from hot sunny 5 to 10 knot Northerlies to cool 15 to 20 knot westerlies the fleet was challenged throughout the contest by the tides.  The first three boats Paul Snow-Hanson (Wakatere), Carl Evans (Kohimarama) and Daniel Wilcox (Murrays Bay) quickly established a jump on the fleet and match raced the final day.  The result only being decided in the last race and then on a count back!  Kate Ellingham had a great regatta to take fourth place.

January 2005 Nuplex Starling Match Racing – Caltex Cup

This event was sailed while the Nuplex Tauranga Cup was being sailed.  Eight of the round robin races were sailed in 15 to 20 knot Westerlies. After the first day the best sailors were starting to emerge.  The final was fought out in ideal Match Racing conditions of 10 knot NW.  Peter Burling (BOP) won the first of the final races to Scot Morrison (Auckland) before losing only his second race of the series to a judges decision.  Peter then went on to score two more wins.

1st Peter Burling ( Bay of Plenty)

2nd Scott Morrison (Auckland).

3rd Chris Dawson (North Harbour)

January 2005 Nuplex Starling Nationals

A record 152 boats sailed in the 2005 Nuplex Starling Nationals at Tauranga.  The fleet sailed two days of preliminary mixed fleets and then split into Gold and Silver for the final two days sailing.  The first two days saw the fleet struggle around the course in light westerly winds.  The 14 yr old local Peter Burling took a strangle hold on the contest.  The first day of Gold and Silver raceing was so light that only one race was sailed.  Everyone sat down and hoped for wind… a little too much as 20 to 25 knots greeted the fleet for the final day.  Just as the first race of the day finished a gust of 30 knots plus sent the fleet into the beach and once the tide changed the racing was abandon for the series after 8 races.
