January 2005 Nuplex Starling Nationals
A record 152 boats sailed in the 2005 Nuplex Starling Nationals at Tauranga. The fleet sailed two days of preliminary mixed fleets and then split into Gold and Silver for the final two days sailing. The first two days saw the fleet struggle around the course in light westerly winds. The 14 yr old local Peter Burling took a strangle hold on the contest. The first day of Gold and Silver raceing was so light that only one race was sailed. Everyone sat down and hoped for wind… a little too much as 20 to 25 knots greeted the fleet for the final day. Just as the first race of the day finished a gust of 30 knots plus sent the fleet into the beach and once the tide changed the racing was abandon for the series after 8 races.
